I was doing an oil change on my L3800 and accidentally added the engine oil to the transmission case... I got about 7 liters of 15w-40 in there. Can I replace the hydraulic oil filter and transmission case fluid and be OK, or do I need to flush the transmission case? If I do need to flush it, does anyone have any recommendations on how to go about it?

Thanks for the help, I'm feeling pretty embarrassed right now.

I started it, but didn't engage the transmission. It's the manual model, not the hydrostatic. I should also mention that it's a diesel.

Honestly, i dont think motor oil would hurt a gear transmission or the hydraulics. Drain it and resume program. Wouldnt put it in engine though.

For a geared tractor - I'm with Tooljunkie.

Let it drain real well, and change the filter.

Does that mean you ran the engine without any engine oil because it was all in the transmission? How long did it run?

No need to worry at all, Motor oil and hydraulic fluid are very close and on some units they actually recommend using motor oil in place of hydraulic fluid.

Just drain it and replace it with hydraulic fluid, I wouldn't even change the filter, it don't damage or plug it up. ;)

That ain't stupid at all ..

if you never do anything you'll never get anything right ..

Used to change oil on the truck, then pour waste oil back into oil jugs for disposal. One time I did a remote oil change and after draining it all out into a dirty pan realized the fresh oil jug I had wasn't, good grief .. 15 mile hike to town to get oil. Learned from that, decided never to drain oil into a transparent jug again, now it all goes into washer fluid containers. You guessed it, couple years later into the washer fluid reservoir goes a cup or two of used oil ... might as well have been a gallon, half a day to pull everything out of the truck drain, rinse, replace ...

We have a reel mower here at school.......the "janitor" filled the hydraulic tank full of diesel.......rather than the tank on the back marked......diesel!

Since it was not started, the entire hydraulic tank was siphoned off and everything was fine......two days latter the grass was shin high!:)

Early one Sat. morning I went to cut firewood. Saw chain was sharp, but I need to add some fuel and bar oil.

That Husqvarna didn't run very well for very long. I had oil in the gas and gas in the oil! I just opened both caps and dumped the saw on it's side and started over.

A friend had low coolant in little green tractor, opened hood and started pouring the green stuff into the crankcase. Good thing my other buddy was nearby and stopped her before starting it. A whole gallon. Oops....

My boss interrupted me mid-service,and didnt give me an oil filter. Sent me out the door on an errand/service call. He decided to lower car and back it out, pumped all the out. "IM NOT CLEANING THAT UP" i yelled. Fresh motor oil is tough to clean up.

Had another boss reach in and start car before i finished,as im filling oil jug i hear car start up. Not a good thing. Oil pump lost its prime. That was not a good day. So, stupid is as stupid does...

Back to work....nothing to see here.

If you decide to have a gathering of people that have made the same mistake, you'll have to book the fair grounds.

Here's my ticket to get in the stadium.

I got back from the bulk store and started the deep fryer to cook up some dinner. The fryer was a little low on oil and I had just bought some. I top off the fryer and head off to kill some time while it is heating up.

When I return there is foam all over the place. The jug of lemon dish soap and vegetable oil were the same color! Apparently that is why they put labels on those things.

It was quite awhile before I finally had dinner that night.
