Looks like a flush is definitely in order.

DONE :D

Gears look to be in good shape and no noticeable play

Just the requisite rust, considering what they have been sitting in.

Will probably do a couple more flushes,
there is a lot of area below the pinion gear that is not accessible without a tear-down.
And I see no need for that.

How do you plan to get rid of that rust? I am thinking that as long as you have the gear box torn down that far, would it be easy enough to replace the bearings? With the kind of rust that you have in there I am sure that the bearings have to be pitted.

Only my gut talking, but I'm with Bill on that one, and use it the way it is.

May not last forever, but a lot better than it was.

That would be my feeling also. Not perfect, but we're talking bush hog, not space shuttle. Probably only last another 20 or 30 years.:D

Yes, I am going to run with it as is,
Everything feels good and looks good.

Once the cover is on I will never see the rust again.

AND

There will be loads of anti seize used in reassembly so to
dismantle will be a breeze in the future.

Brush Hog rebuild update,

Over the last few days I have done some paint removal in two stages;
1 with a paint remover...

2 with the wire wheel...

Today I did a light coat of Rust-Oleum Rust Reformer...

And a coat of Epoxy primer...

Also got most of the ancillary parts primered and painted...

Lookin' good Bill
Thanks, it is coming along, the nice weather here helps :D

Got the three point assembly painted and put together

A fresh coat of color on the deck, (yes it should be RED), but this is not a restoration, all my implements will be ORANGE :p

And the assembly begins.....

Last bit will be the gearbox, blade assembly and decals.

Drive shaft lubed, assembled with new zerks

Blade pan de-rusted, primered and painted

Added a washer at the bottom and top of the fork tube, do not see why it should be metal to metal?
Wish I could have found a 3" one for the bottom

Replaced ID tag

Next the gear box and decals

Today I got the gearbox painted, photos later perhaps. But I noticed something actually a couple things,
I was surprised that the 4 bolts for the top cover were metric,
while I was cleaning off all the gunk I noticed the gearbox was actually made in Italy for brush hog.

I also noticed I've been calling this thing a brush hog it is actually a BUSH HOG, gar-dang, don't I feel stupid.

Well anyway no help to my stupidity this thing will be assembled tomorrow!

I compounded a finish mower that I just bought. It is a Woods RD60, that was originally Kubota Orange. It had faded to an unsavory pink, so I cleaned as much of the oxidation off that I could. It looks well used, but at least it's not pink!

Gear box all painted and ready to be installed
(NO that is not Bronco's Orange and Blue, my Black paint was dried up)

New safety decals installed

Found a rubber plug to help keep some water off the blade pan

BEFORE

AFTER

All new hardware, paint and decals.
Blade assembly re-installed with plenty of grease and anti-seize

With the weather still nice I may have time to do the Rhino Rear Blade this winter also :D

It is already in the shop :p

Awesome work! I just became the recipient of a rotary cutter (unknown brand) and following your work on here has given me lots of ideas about what to do with mine. Hope it turns out half as well as yours did!
