temp has been below zero-yesterday minus 20 today 17 degrees had a heater on the oil pan tractor started fine ran about 10 minutes; then started running very rough eventually quit will not start turns over like it wants to fire black smoke but will not run? still snowing .b2350

Thank you everyone 911 was the answer, added to tank let set tried starting after 1 hour started rough but smoothed right out after 911 got to filter

Gelled fuel? Get diesel de-ice additive.

Yep probably gelled, are you using winter fuel or #1 diesel, it does make a difference and as said use a fuel conditioner.

Agree with the others, it's gelled. Need to add some good anti-gel treatment to get it running and then use a good fuel conditioner every time you add fuel after that. You may even need to change the fuel filter depending on how bad it's gelled.

I think everyone has this right, think most will recommend Diesel 911 additive for this.

it may be gelled, but if it started running ruff and now you have black smoke it could be a faulty injector.

May want to check the fuel cap?
If the Vent has frozen closed.
If it will run with cap,loose?
Take it inside for a while.

Not meaning to hijack thread, just want some clarification.
I have been lucky enough to have never needed to deal with jelled fuel. I always treat with Power service even when purchasing winter blend diesel.
The OP's description of problems state very cold out, started fine, ran for a short while , ran rough then quit and won't start. Sounds like jelling to me also.
What I do not understand is the black smoke. That to me suggests to much fuel. In my mind a jelled fuel system blocks the flow of fuel, so I am puzzled by the black smoke. Does the fuel flow some and just not mist well enough coming from the injectors to burn properly? Could someone help explain this?

You nailed it, the properties of the fuel change all different ways, and atomization is effected.

I use dieselkleen anti-gel and injector cleaner year round. Has never let me down.

Glad you got it going. At least during the cold I would keep conditioner in the fuel to prevent these problems. It's bad enough to have to work in the cold. No need to work on your tractor so you can work with your tractor when it can be prevented.

Get yourself a White Powerservice bottle of anti gel to add to your tank to keep it from re-gelling. The Red 911 will un-gel the fuel after it has gelled up but doesn't do much to prevent gelling. Add the appropriate amount every time you fuel up. I add it to my fuel cans before I fill them so that it is mixed in well.
