1977 B7100 Grey Market

I have a b7100 grey market tractor, best guess, a 1977-78. One common issue all grey market owners have is obtaining parts from a Kubota dealer. The reoccurring question they have is, what the serial no# and as soon as you give them the No# of a grey market tractor, they tell you they cannot sell you parts as it is a grey market and as part of the lawsuit filed by Kubota against the import of these tractors they can not sell you parts for it, even if it is a genuine Kubota.
Anyway, what I am looking for is the sequence Kubota used for its American built machines. The identifying serial no# for my tractor is B7001-18504, making it a grey market. My best guess is that the the first 5 digits are out of sequence. Instead of being B7001(Japan use) it should be B7100(American Use). I'm not sure what the last 5 exactly mean but I am guessing that it has something to do with the manufacturing plant, date and/or production number.
Anyway, What I have is a 1977 grey market B7100 Kubota 4WD. Is there anyone here that has a similar machine, not grey market, or you just know, that can provide me with some insight to how Kubota arranged there serial numbers and what they mean, so I can buy parts for my tractor.
To be clear, I am not looking to change my serial no# or alter it in anyway. I am not looking to use someone's no#. I am not trying to sell it or make it more than it is. At this point I am in the process of repainting it and want to buy the stickers for it. But without a good serial number the dealer wont even look up the part numbers for a sticker.

Thanks For Reading
TOM G.

Some thoughts for you.
1- Last time I went for parts, I gave the engine code as D750 so the lookup was easy.
2 - On another matter, the parts guy asked the real model number, I told him, he went into the back room and came out with a B7001 catalogue. No problem for them, but this is Canada where gray market units are welcome.
3 - I bought a parts catalogue cd on eBay for a few dollars - contact me for the sellers name if you are interested, or tell me which stickers and I will look up the numbers.

Apparently engine parts are no issue, but some transmissions are different between the 7001 and the 7100.

Thanks for the suggestions and the links.

Steve, Does your parts cd include part numbers for decals, warning stickers and control stickers. If so, I would be interested in the ebay seller to obtain one. I have a parts manual I downloaded from this site last spring but it does not have decal/sticker part numbers.

Thanks

Sooo... why do you think you've got a gray market B7100?

Does your tractor still have the aluminum nameplate under the serial #? Does it say it's a B7100 or a B7001?

My B7100 has a S/N that starts with B7001 and according the the list that Vic posted it's a 1979. The nameplate says it's a B7100.

I think all B7100's are legitimate, i.e. not gray market, and that your dealer may be jumping to wrong conclusions... either that or I've been duped!

Like Bellinghamster, I have a tractor that has a serial number stamped into the transmission that reads "B6001 23813", but the nameplate next to it states that it is a B6100. So I'm confused as to whether or not it is a gray market tractor.

All of the decals on the tractor are in english with a french translation underneath the english words. There aren't any japanese words anywhere. The hood has a "kubota" decal on it, but the area on the hood where the model decal would normally be is too faded to read.

Can anyone tell me if this is a gray market tractor? Year?

Mike

Another Ran into this issue lately with a B7100. Serial was like yours..... B7001 but NOT Grey. Here is the thread. You might find it interesting

http://www.orangetractortalks.com/forums/showthread.php?t=23555

Like the B7100 mentioned above your B6100 has a parts number schematic page at USA's Kubota Webesite so it is NOT grey. Maybe the French addition is cause it was sold to both USA and Canadian Market?

Thanks Coach! Happy to know that my newly undertaken rebuild will not include the "gray market challenge". I think your french language theory is sound as well. Onward!

This issue keeps coming up.
#1 there is no grey market B7100!
All the B7100 were US market
Now a B7000, B7001 are grey market, but they are not the same tractor as a b7100.
Yes they share some of the same parts but they are not the same.

The Clutch housing tunnels were mass produced and I think there was just an error made with the serial # stamps as almost if not all of them, B6100 and B7100 alike both have B6001-, B7001- starting serial #'s.
And yes most parts guys have no clue what they are doing! ;)

TO add to what NIW said - and this is straight from TRACTORDATA dot com....

"The Kubota B7100 was not available in the late 1980s, after that only the hydrostatic was available. Early model B7100 serial numbers began with "B7001", which is the Asian-market model designation."

That's about as clear as mud! Maybe TractorData is muddy?

This gets us back to the original wondermont. It's either a B7100 and not grey, or it's a B7001 and is grey. So a B7100 can have a serial number that begins with B7001, and not grey?

Yes they could have worded it a little better.

It should have read:
Kubota made an error when they started the B7100's serial #'s with the Japanese market B7001 number. ;)

At 868 hours.....it is like a one year old car! You have it broken in now......
if taken care of well - oils and what not changed.......you ought to see 4, 5 or even 6000 hours!;);)

I was talking to a Dallas Kubota dealer at lunch this week about tractor usage and life expectancy. It was most interesting. According to Kubota study, tractors in the 60HP and less group average 118 hours per year. Tractors greater than 60HP average 195 hours per year. Average tractor lasts 4550 hours regardless of engine size. Therefore, small tractors have average life expectancy of 38.5 years; larger tractors have average life expectancy 23.5 years. I guess the bigger tractors are workhorses, and it shows in the annual hours used. All this assumes average maintenance only. I am sure tractor life can be extended with much better care than average maintenance.
