Engine Issues

I have a 1990 B2150 with a 25HP diesel. I was cutting some grass and tractor was doing fine, then all of a sudden the RPMs started going down (as if I was throttling the engine down) and the tractor shut off. It will start up fine and run at low RPM for a few seconds, RPMs will kind of bounce around, then then engine will die.

Any ideas what this could be? I checked the throttle mechanism and it seems fine, in fact the engine does not seem to respond to moving the throttle up and down. I flushed the radiator recently but don't see how that would be related... please help!

Sounds like fuel system to me. Either a dirty fuel filter or could have something in the tank restricting fuel flow.

Maybe you have a fuel problem. When did you last replace the fuel filter? Or add fuel? Sure it was diesel?

Third... Fuel issue!

Gasoline contaminated, water contaminated, algae growth (look for a little black in the filter container, or some obstruction in the lines, and last and very least a bad lift pump. ;)

My wife left the fuel cap off of our tractor for several hours one time. Started having fuel delivery problems. When I drained the fuel tank there were several wasps floating around. And that was the end of her tractor work!

Thanks for the tips guys, we are getting there slowly! I pulled out the fuel filter and it was caked with sediment. I've only put 70 hours on the tractor so I will blame the previous owner :p

However, once I replaced the filter I couldn't get the filter chamber to refill with fuel, and I'm still not getting fuel to the engine. The fuel in the tank itself doesn't appear to be blocked up. Maybe I just need to bleed to get all the air out, going to try that next but would welcome any other suggestions.

Is there a way to blow air backwards from the filter to the tank?

Yes there is - remove filter.......loosen or remove fuel cap, best to loosen a bit rather than remove.

the trick here is to NOT blow a lot of pressure backwards......
DO not take an air compressor and hit it! Find a way to apply about 5 -6 psi to the hose....a little will go a long way!

do you feel that your line is clogged or tank obstructed ?

Do you not have a good flow when filter is removed?

At the risk of "ribbing" a new-friend... actually it is YOUR fault. ;) The Mx schedule for your tractor actually "requires" that filter be serviced every 100 hours "minimum" and difficult operating conditions/stale fuel requires more frequent service.

Complete service of a "newly acquired" piece of equipment should be the goal of every "new to me" owner.... (which reminds me... I've got 3 pails of UDT and two hyd filters I need to install in my "new to me" tractor.)

Bled the lines and its running fine now. Only weird thing is that it will run with the fuel cock in the "open" position, but sputters and stalls out in the "close" position, which is opposite of what the manual says should happen... Anyhow its out cutting grass again, thank you all for the advice.

Looks like you found a typo in the manual. Congrats on getting it running again.

Sometimes manuals illustrations can be misleading... does the manual have the "handle" in the Off position when the valve is "on". Perhaps the opposite end of that handle has a little arrow on it pointing towards "on"...??
