I am new to the forum and I hope someone can answer a question for me. I have a ZD21 that needs an engine. I found a D1005. My question is can I use the D1005 as a replacement without major modifications? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Is the engine you have now damaged beyond repair? A good rebuild might be a better solution especially if you are changing engine models.

The ZD21 takes a D782 no where close to a D1005, and no the D722 is not just a littler version of a D782, they are different series of engines, there is no direct cross over to another engine as far as i can tell, it's in a class all it's own.

I'm with rentthis, do you not have the original engine or is it damaged beyond repair?
Much easier to deal with the engine you have then to just try and shoehorn a different engine in place of it.

If you need another just get the same engine and save all the abuse:

Thank you both for the response. I do still have the original engine. I overheated it. It still runs but it now smokes, no water in the oil, but I think it will need to be rebuilt. I was just hoping to find an easy solution so I will be ready to cut my grass in the Spring.

Normally on an overheat on these engine one or 2 things happen, they either blow a head gasket (rare) or they crack the head, both are an easy fix, and much cheaper than a complete engine. ;)
