Will not reverse

I have a L175 that won't backup. For the last year or so I've had to hold the shift lever to keep the transmission from jumping out of reverse and making a grinding noise. Now when I try to reverse all I get is the grinding and it won't engage. Does this sound like a bad/bend shift fork or a bad gear? Is there a service manual that helps with a rebuild? :(

That is cuz L175 is a git er done tractor and not a back up tractor. :D :D :D :D

Well holding it in gear was the progressive wear action but where this happens I don't know. It could be the shift fork or the gear. Mechanically thinking I would tend to think a shift fork more than a gear but either is possible.

The clutch turns the input shaft so all forward gears or movement would not work if it fails.

The grinding in reverse only would not be effected by a clutch so I think towards the internal parts of the trans.

Thanks for the thoughts on the problem. Actually the forward gears work fine. I agree it is a workhorse of a tractor. I guess I'm going to have to open it up to figure out where the problem is, I just thought maybe this was a common problem that someone else has already encountered. The way it acted before going completly out I'm leaning towards a bent shift fork.

The clutch could be on the edge of going out. I've hauled many tractors where it would go in one direction but not all. Or the tractor would go in gear but the PTO would not engage because of the clutch.

LtNike,

Do a search of L175 reverse. I know this has been discussed before; when I asked about my L175 poping out of reverse Vic said (IIRC) that it was the reverse gear itself that gets worn. Other than the idea of splitting a tractor, this doesn't seem to be that bad of a job sinc the tractor is small, just be sure to support both halves safely.

Mine still moves in reverse, but wants to come out of gear of its own accord. Unfortunately I don't have the funds to split the trator and fix it correctly right now, since my daughter wrecked the new used truck two weeks after getting it.

Good luck,

Robert

Hey I forgot to add, while you have it apart you might as well put in a new clutch, pressure plate, etc., while you are there.

Thanks for the help guys. I will definitly be putting in a new clutch. Although it is not slipping, it feels weak and the pedal is low. Actually I never considered that it could be the clutch causing the problem. This is something I will look for when I open it up.

Split the case and sure enough there is about a quarter of an inch wore off the reverse gear. Shift forks look good as well as the clutch disk and flywheel. I'll replace the complete clutch and throwout and have the flywheel turned. Hopefully that along with a new reverse gear will put me back in businesss.

was reading your thread and I have the same problem with mine.I was wondering if you changed out the reverse gear yet,and how complicated was it once you had the tranny down. did you have to remove all the gears or was there a way to just remove the reverse gear and shaft itself, I'm hoping. Thanks for any info.

Replaced reverse gear and the clutch, runs fine now. The clutch was in good shape, but while I was there... To answer your question about reverse gear, there is no need to remove any other gears. The reverse gear shaft is removed from the bell housing side and there is enough room to reach in from the top of the transmission and remove the reverse gear as you slide the shaft forward. Actually there is no need to break apart the transmission and rear end. Research the reverse gear on the INTERNET. I got one for $70 which was less than a third the dealer price. Good luck. The hardest part of the whole job is getting the shift forks and PTO selector in the right positions when you reinstall the shift levers. Just takes patience.:)
