I see on the front page that Kubota started in 1972. I am sure some of you have tractors that are still around from the early days. Show me some of your 1970s tractors! Who has the oldest one?

The guys that have the l1500's, l175, l225, l260, ect.... are probably the top contenders.

It's pretty difficult to know the exact age of a tractor unless you purchased it new, or got the paperwork from someone who did.

Mine is a 1974 L260 so its old but not the oldest. On the other hand its 21 years newer than the 1953 Oliver row crop 77 that it replaces. A working 3 pt. hitch is quite an improvement even if I still don't have an FEL used it today with a subsoiler to pull up some rose bushes.

L1500DT. I don't know how old it is, but I think it's older than some of the entries here.

As I was restoring my 1972 Kubota L210 many years ago, I did extensive research into their history here in the USA. 1972 is often listed as the beginning of Kubota in the states, but that is not all together correct. 1972 marks the first year in which a certain model was manufactured and sold solely in the US. That model was the L210. Prior to that however, the L200 was sold in the US. As early as 1969. However, since that model was sold both in Japan and the US it is still considered by many as a gray market tractor. In fact, some L200's do have the Japaneses signage.

But even prior to that, Kubota was marketing a tractor in the US. The story goes that do to import regulations prior to 1969, they could not import and sell "Kubota" tractors. So they cut a deal with McCulloch in which they would manufacture tractors, import them and sell them under the McCulloch brand. The earliest example I found was a model D-20 made in 1965. You can google it.

So is 1972 the real date Kubota entered the US market?

What's interesting is there are even errors on the current Kubota website regarding "introduced years" of prior products. What's really interesting is they use to be correct and for some reason have been changed. But errors on websites are not uncommon.

I just thought some of you may enjoy reading some less known history of Kubota tractors. They have been here a lot longer than advertised.

Several say 1972 - 1973 but I'm not too sure that is right.

According to the Kubota website the L200 was introduced in 1969. See below.

Model L200F
Year Introduced 1969
Transmission Type Gear
Gross Horsepower 19
Wheel Drive 2
Loaders --
Backhoes --
Mowers --

It was sold both in Japan and the USA. If the labels are in English, then it was originally sold in the USA. If the labels are in Japanese, then it was originally sold in Japan.

It was later replaced by the L210 in 1972. All though the L210 was very similar in size and still maintained certain aspects of the L210, one of the changed they did make was to move the the headlamps from the fenders to the grill. One thing that they did keep the same in the '72 L210 model was they kept the replaceable oil filter cartridge. In '73 they had converted over to a spin off style filter. I had a heck of a time finding the right oil filter for the L210. Every place showed the spin off filter. The only way I was able to get the right filter was to ask for a filter for the L200. That is why there may be some confusion at to what year the L210 was introduced. Since they did change some things between the '72 and the '73 models.
