That project is an example of how someone LEARNS common sense. Yep, no one is born with it, it's learned. When one has the ability to evaluate the results of a decision and improve on the choice next time, they are on the path to common sense!!!!

Did the 50hour service on the BX. I went ahead with the revised service interval in the newest manual and changed the HST fluid and cleaned the screen. Pleasantly surprised w/ how clean the screen actually was -- just 2 flecks of grey sealant was about all there was. I'd seen some pictures of the screen being nearly completely covered in errant sealant bits.

In other news, I'm actually shocked that I put 50 hours on in ~9 months. My biggest worry was it'd become a garage queen with hardly any real usage. From spreading ag lime, to post hole digging, to clearing snow, I'm only kicking myself for not jumping in sooner.

Was that powdered lime? Any reason you went with that over granular?

We did our ballfields a few weeks ago with granular.

Primarily cost: powder is ~25% lower cost here.

It may also be better for no-till, top-dressing applications like this. The idea that there's more uniform mobility into the thatch than a denser, more concentrated granual (debatable).

I can see that, literally. Rye grass and little brown marbles is hard to see where you’ve been!

We got lucky and had a nice soaking rain the following day.

Yes, my applications were timed to the calm just before rain showers came.

Soil test says I need 2.9 tons/ac for a fully tilled application to ~6" depth. My plan is to put on a 1+ ton/ac for 2 years and then retest on the 3rd year to see if I need to keep going. No-till ag studies show that given enough time (years), top-dressing will work down to a depth of 3-4", which is where most of the roots are anyway.

Who knows, it might all be a waste of time and $$

Certainly debatable. Having managed golf course grounds for years, all I have ever used is granular lime when needed. A properly calibrated spreader with a good operator yields the needed results. Applying on top of snow cover would be common practice as well. Snow melt takes it right down.

What spreader is that on your BX?

Lime is never wasted if needed. It is the cheapest and probably the most overlooked soil nutrient. Some tool rental stores have Spike Rollers available which will aerate and allow water to more easily penetrate the surface. Of course that won't work if the ground is frozen.

It's a Cosmo S500 that I picked up off craigslist for a little under $200. It'll hold 500# if I filled it to the top, but, it tends to "slosh" out in the bumps, so, I usually keep under that.
Nice! I have briefly searched for them for my BX, but don’t have enough need for one at the moment

It takes lime about 6 months to break down and do it's job. Pelletized works a bit quicker but may not be as long lasting.

I normally use pelletized and put it down with the fertilizer and seed after I disc in the Fall. It's just more convenient for me that way.

I certainly wasn’t spreading lime of any variety…😳😉

It was a little brisk this morning. Thankfully almost no wind. That’s degrees F.

Did get some wood pellets. Now a little over 3 tons left for the season.

Also stopped at my local hardware store for a re-supply.

Always use the white bottle anyway. We’ll just call the 911 “insurance.” Looks like a couple more nights below zero next week.

Nephew and I went to the farm today. Had to jumpstart the Kubota, battery didn't have enough juice to turn the motor. We got everything warming up and went and cut up a tree by the barn with the Stihl MS271. The 20-inch bar wasn't long enough to cut through, so had to move from one side of the tree to the other.

Nephew used the MF383 to drag some of the larger sections over to the wood pile. Once we got that all cleaned up, went to to the top of the hill by the house and the nephew cut up a tree that had blown over while I hauled the sections to the wood pile.

Made quick work of both trees. Still have some brush and smaller limbs to clean up, but with 15-20 mph winds and the temp in the teens, we decided that we had accomplished what we had come to do and will get the rest on a little warmer day. Although, I pointed out to him that it was a nice 70+ degrees in the cab with no windchill, realizing afterwards that he is about a foot taller than me and several years younger and could probably easily whoop this old man's butt if he wanted to.

All in all, we had a fun day.

All done with 5 gallon cans for filling the tractor. I'll pick up a battery that will also serve as winch power for my landscape trailer.

I decided to take the toys down in the woods to heat me up for the day and the house next year ;) Two decent sized red oaks dropped and blocked. I will take the splitter down in a couple of weeks and then haul it all up to the barn for the next year or two's wood. in the 20's today so it was perfect for this type of work/exercise.

Started cleaning up my farmstead with my KX057-5 excavator. Little machine with a big heart. I'm surprised how much it can do. I'm glad i didn't go bigger than i can haul with a 3/4 ton pickup.
