Never hurts to ask ! The Warn Lock-O-Matic 4wd hubs on my 57 Willys failed, I contacted Warn as the box said 'lifetime WARN-tee on it', they said 'send them in'...I did, they returned them as 'unfixable' AND included set a set of brand new manual hubs as replacements !!!

Wish I still had that truck... 12 sped, dual PTO, frame off restoration.....sigh

California is still giving container refunds.

Last year a couple was indicted and prosecuted for transporting hundreds of thousands of bottles into California to get the container rebate. Reportedly, they collected almost a million bucks over the years they were doing it.

Hard way to earn a buck...

In BC the deposit on cans is 5cents. In neighboring Alberta it is 10cents. There's a number of folks in the mountain time zone adjoining Alberta that take advantage of this by returning their containers in Alberta. The market works!

In the Phoenix area, the scrap price per pound for aluminum cans is around .35 cents, or 1.00 dollar.
The dollar per pound guys haul them to California to get the higher container price- highly illegal, but when has that ever stopped anyone?

I made my spending money picking up coke bottles till about 67'. Three bux for a case of bottles back then. We would also catch the little green "painted" turtles not much bigger than a fifty cent piece and sell them to Mr. Wright at the Ben Franklin for a quarter. He would turn abound and sell them for a dollar. That's about when I started mowing yards with Daddy's Western Auto bought 'Wizard' lawn mower.

I collected scorpions for the antivenin program at ASU.
25 cents a piece if I remember right.
Found a huge (6" long) giant hairy hadrus once; it was the largest they'd ever seen. Gave me $20 for that one.

I used to catch lamprey eels in the mud in the creeks. Bait shops sold them to sturgeon fishermen. 6 to a ziplock bag, just covered in water, and frozen. They reanimate when thawed out. A buck apiece. Made $500 one day when they dredged the sloughs and put the muck on the banks for me to pick through.

Now that's a hard way to make a buck! I am ok with most critters, but not so keen on scorpions. Catch them at night with a light?

No, couldn't afford a battery op black light back in those days. I used burlap sacks. Find a likely area, wet the burlap sack, spread it out about dusk. Come back the next morning before it gets hot, peel back the burlap, and pick 'em up with ice tongs.
(they love the moisture) I modified a clear plastic shoe box with a sliding door on top to put them in. Usually 6-8 "traps" yielded 75 to 100 scorps, & I think my record was over 200 in a day.
Scorpions were never a problem, but I had several encounters with rattlesnakes that weren't fun. Never got bit, but close sometimes.
Incidentally I carried a snake stick on these outings. It consisted of a standard broom handle with a heavy wire "U" at the end to pin the snakes head.
When I found that huge scorpion, he was PO'ed, and did not want to go peacefully.
When I tried to pin him with the snake stick, he of course tried to sting it to death.
He hit it so hard that I could hear the impacts and he moved the stick in my hand.
Bada$$ critter. I think it took ten minutes to get him in that box.

I house sat once for a herpetologist that kept rattlesnakes . The scary part was opening the back door and turning the lights on in case one got out of its terrarium. And maybe filling their water dishes.

Maine does deposit/return. Most folks are STILL too lazy to bother.

Wife and I have a 15 mile route that we cover on a rotation. One mile at a time, up one side of the road and down the other. Since snow melt, we've turned in $137.85 worth of cans and bottles.

It'll slow down a little now that we've gotten the over-winter collection out from under the snow, but we usually average $40 to $50 a month.

We walk for the exercise, the cans are just a bonus. (That's our story...)
