Boy I'm sure glad I built my trailer when I did. This week I went to pick up a couple pieces of metal, a 5ft 2x2 x1/4" angle was 3.25 per ft and a 4ft piece of 2x2x3/16" square was 5.70 per foot. Even back then, 17 years ago it was probably cheaper to buy one already made then to build it myself. I feel sorry for the younger generation starting out.

Its the tariff war... Things will reset once that gets resolved. Or, you needa find a new supplier. Those sound like Home Depot prices.

A friend has a big welding shop here in CC. He recycles his bits and pieces in two giant dumpsters that get emptied every other month. I dumpster dive in both of them. He said the price of steel was at an all-time low. He had to load up the dumpsters to keep from getting a "pick-up" charge.

Earlier this year, I bought a couple of loads of stock for some projects and, if I remember right, 1/8 1-inch square stock was like $9 in ten foot sections. 1 1/2 and 2" was like $13 and $15 a stick.

Now that you mention it, I am glad I hauled all that stuff home before the trade war kicked off. :)

Scrapper price here is $100 p/ton. Lowest it's been for a LONG time.

A couple of months ago I bought two pieces of 2x2x1/4 sq. tubing. I gave $10 for a 10' stick. I figured it would be at least twice that, that's why I bought two.

Exactly the opposite.

What is happening is new steel is UP $$

And scrap is in the toilet.

And a lot of steel places are taking advantage of the tarrif situation by jacking up prices way beyond any effect on them.

I see it right here in CT.

Logan steel / bargain bin went from $1.00 a lb to $2.00 a lb for drops ...

Stuff thats been sitting on shelves for years

Im just a hobby / weekend welder

But I know my project motivation has taken a back seat... for now.

I have 4 mobile home trailer tongues that I can't give away. Good steel, 3 are from back in 70's and 80', 4th from 2000.

They have surface rust on them but they are stout, just leaning next to a tree at my garden.

Guess I will cut them up sometime, keep few pieces and the rest to scrap yard.

I guess I got real lucky, I buy Rems from our local steel yard once a year for scrap price I got a whole trailer load of steel for less than $1K and it's a lot of steel, everything from heavy wall pipe, expanded metal, sheets, and plenty of angle, square tube and flat stock.
Nothing is under 4 foot in length so very usable stuff! :D
Now all I need is a shop to work in over the winter! ;)

I always go through the scrap first to see what I can find but lately it's picked over pretty good before I get there. I just hope they settle this bullcrap so we can all get on with our lives.

Yep, that's the first thing I thought, these are Home Depot prices. Even the people in the office were complaining about how high the prices have soared.

The steel place I buy from in downtown Phoenix has the plasma cut steel 1/4" targets of bunnies and odd target shapes. Its the kind of steel made for targets and its really reasonable at $10 and under. If I could shoot on my property, I would get a few. I may pick up a single for sighting-in just, you know, just in case.

:)

I've been know to pull over on the side of the road to grab a piece of steel .:p
Same here, also aluminum. A few years back, I was driving (northbound on 67th ave, just north of Greenway, for those who know Phx area) and traffic had come to a standstill. A truck had lost a piece of aluminum stock & it was blocking traffic. Another guy & I were able to roll it off to the side, but I was unable to figure how to get it in my truck to take it home. It was solid 8" bar, 21' long, of 6061 aluminum. :(

cut steel 1/4" targets of bunnies and odd target shapes.
Decades ago, I found a spot north of Phoenix where someone had been shooting at steel plate, 1/4" plain & 1/2" diamond plate. Judging by the piles of brass, they must have been shooting AP from machine guns, 30.06 & 8mm. I brought the steel home, and was able to cut these out from what was left. They're like old friends now, except that I don't take old friends out and shoot at them.:D
