No I haven't load tested my battery.
The clunker ran just fine to the job site.
Climbed on to start and got one "click".
Removed - and + cables replaced them bright and tight.
The test from the - post to the starter lug 13.2V
No indicator lights on the dash and no more clicks.
Wondered about the safety switches on clutch and gear selector.
Probably a 1984 or something - manual tranny - 4X4 w/275 FEL
What the heck could have happened? :mad:

You say your cables are bright and tight. Did you also remove and clean the ground wire where it attaches to the frame, bright and tight?

Why don't you start with the simple things like what model tractor is it?

As was asked, what is the model ? Kubota? B?BX?L? M?

and a click would be a battery to starter problem, a dead stick would be a safety switch, if indeed it has that.

and for the record - 13+ volts means there IS a connection present, but it will not tell you how good the connection is, volts are great, but you have to have the ability to FLOW the amps to get the starter to turn.

I would look at the cables again as mentioned - a cable that looks good....can be bad UNDER the insulation, and the grounding strap is usually the "bad" one;)

Sorry fellows for the post failure :eek: and returning to the site to find the replies. I guess better late than never but the clunker is a mid 80s B7500.
Thanks for all the replies that offer ideas of my problem. Most of them I had already had a go at. Problems were exacerbated by a 7" - 8" two day rain. This created an emergency that demanded a tow of the tractor from the lake shore where I had the 'no start' problem. At my shop I ran through the obvious tests again. One test revealed that there is 13V to both terminals on the solenoid but no activity from the starter, clutch pedal in or out. Should I suspect the solenoid or the starter? Thanks again for the come backs.

Or no ground to the starter, check from the + terminal of the battery to the starter case. ;)
