As some of you know I use a 1951 John Deere B on my hobby farm....... not as much, now that the Kubota arrived though.

It's a very nice looking and well maintained tractor but lately it's been giving me grief to the point of I'm flipping a coin of " will it fire up" or concerned where it's going to stall. Usually they're simple fixes but with my injuries working on stuff is a bit hard or not enjoyable. I'm up for a project but on my time......not trying to beat a storm raking hay. With my injuries it's also very hard for me to get on and off the tractor especially with the hand clutch so I decided to sell it. I sold it with in 3 days for more than I paid for it and stuck in for new parts. A gentleman came 6 hours away to get it.

I decided to look for a farmall m. I would've settled for an h but wanted to feel like I upgraded. I chose a farmall because I grew up with an H and M moving wagons around, my neighbor has one along with his brothers and his grandpa is a retired ih mechanic so I figures I'd be in good hands if I needed mechanical advice. Just like the B for laughs I put out a looking for ad and an hour later a gentleman texted me some pictures and info. He had a 1951 M with power steering and live hydraulics he didn't use much besides moving wagons he'd be willing to sell. It's not as nice looking as the B, she's definitely in work clothes but I'm happy and comfortable on it. It looks to fit in better on my farm too.

Too bad about the old B having to move out, but it looks like you did good finding a replacement shed mate for your other iron.

That’s a pretty nice looking M. Tin looks straight and not beat up which is a huge plus. They are good tractors and will be much easier to use going forward than the John Deere was.

Congratulations and what a beauty! I just started restoring my H and I must say that these tractors were built to last. Parts are still available.

Thank you. With my injuries I'm looking at a less demanding job. A few times I thought of of some sort of media position of either, catalogs, website/social media, parts catalogs, or even an equipment sales person where I can utilize my photography skills. Unfortunately there's really nothing in my small area for that or close to construction pay.

2 years trying and 36 pictures later. I won a tractor parts catalog contest. Didn't make the cover but still neat. It's not my favorite picture but at the same point seeing a bunch of rusty 8n's win I'm happy it was chosen.

The M seems to fit my line up better and it just seems like it belongs more here.

That’s a pretty nice looking M. Tin looks straight and not beat up which is a huge plus. They are good tractors and will be much easier to use going forward than the John Deere was.

The hood has a couple of cuts and doesn't latch completely due to the power steering but other than that the tin and paint look nice. I don't see any over spray on parts but can't say 100% certain if it's original or not. In my area you still see h's or m's running wagons around or pto's. It just looks more solid vs my b. There's pros and cons to each tractor but I feel like I'm ahead on the m.

Thank you and sorry for your lost. I hope everything goes well through the estate. It took me over a year and a half to get my place because the kids didn't talk, and each one of them had a lawyer. During a rummage sale if a nick nack went for 1.00 each kid was fighting over a quarter . I was looking for a super m or a 300 but this was nice with the power steering and live hydraulics. Most ih's I saw came across the ta was shot. Good luck in getting the tractor. It's always nice to keep stuff in the family.

Thank you. I'll have to keep tabs on your posts. The m just seems beefier than the B. Idk if it's the stamped frame of the B or what. In my area you still see h's or m's hauling wagons or running pto's. With jd it seems like you're really paying for the green color. I have a dealer 10 minutes away vs a case ih one 25 minutes away but I noticed stores like TSC carry parts. Which is nice for emergency.

I had a 2 row Brady Stalk chopper I bought cheap on an auction. The B Couldn't handle it. I sold it to buy a 3 point brush hog. With the m I wish I would've kept it now but it's nice using the Kubota loader to knock down the grass or stalks brush hogging.

Just puttering around the yard it seems like 2nd gear was the b's 4th

I bought my 730 Case from a man who purchased it new in 1966. He use it farming for years then parked it in the barn. I found it when he asked me to help him with a project and we had to get something out of the barn. The tractor fenders are flat on top and there was a pile of pigeon crap on one fender a foot in dia. and a foot coned up tall.

When I finally bought it first thing I did was power wash it. Then painted the wheels and a few other things. When Lee went to the weekly auction he came by one day and asked me where I found that Case, and what did I do with his.....

Anyways I have a few 2-cyl JD tractors and my "A" has become unreliable as well - need to tear into it, the engines are simple devices and there are plenty of available parts so it's just a matter of getting it fixed. I think my problems are related to the Magneto and moisture.

I will add a 'B", "50", or "520" to my collection as one of my next tractors.

The little bit I worked on the B the problems were, hard or no start ups which was old wiring, bad cut out, gas in the oil, battery and wrong spark plugs. New gauges were added, but never got the temperature to move, numerous times after working it for 15 minutes it'd start to hic up, and miss, numerous times sitting for awhile it didn't want to run/move unless I limped it or rode the clutch, the carb always needed adjustments or cleaning after a spotless tank cleaning, it started leaking oil bad to where I had to add oil each time I used it. Somehow the timing got off on it and had to readjust the magneto. I'm sure I'm forgetting a few things. It's a simple tractor to work on and there's pro's vs cons of the b and m and I'm sure the biggest factor was between the last owner and I it sat a lot. The fixes so far wasn't anything serious but it was always " what next" or " where?" I wasn't up for splitting the tractor and with hardware in my leg It was hard for me to get on and off the tractor. I ended up selling it mainly for that reason. I'm happy with the M. I thought about an A, 520, and 730 for a collection but don't even use 1 tractor enough as it is.

I have a JD '40' and a '420' as well as the 'A'. The '40' is going to need a rebuild sometime in the next decade, but it gets about 2 hours of use a year so it can last a long time at that rate.

The biggest con I can think of with the 'M' is that it doesn't have that 2-cylinder pop. Otherwise they're great machines.

It was a very nice tractor. I was the 3rd owner. The guy before me used it to pull tobacco wagons into the barn. I was lucky to use it 3 hours a year. When it ran, it ran good for the most part. I really had fun using it was fun running.......other than backing up with the hand clutch. I had a lot of people watch me from the road doing feild work. With my limitations it was just hard to get on and off and other than being my 1st tractor it wasn't anything too special where I was up for completely ripping into it.........it was hard finding help with it too. Everyone I know are ih guys, and on fourms not too many older guys are on there with advice. Like I said pros and cons to each of their own. It was sad seeing it go 6 hours away that I won't see it in the area. In my area the 2 cylinders are worth more than the farmalls........one not running will cost more than an average looking farmall. I do like how easy the hood comes off the M vs the b. I like the seat and the feeling of be secure on the b seat. I do miss the 2 cylinder sound, I was going to put a straight pipe on the m, but it sounded like a fast and furious car to me. I guess I could pull spark plugs until I get the 2 cylinder sound lol
