My little bx1880 has exactly 75 hours on it. I decided to check out the air filter and see how its holding up. Its dirty, as expected. When i pulled the air filter off i could see that on the other side of the air intake that small grass clipping were piled up probably a half inch into the air intake, meaning stuff is getting through. I really dont like the idea of that . I dont know if the debris actually made it into the engine though. In general the other side should be pretty clean.. not sure if its a concern. I cant help but feel like my engine is getting dusted.

Do you mean the back side of the filter canister
That's semi normal, I blow the canister out before removing the filter.

I've gone through dozens of airfilters in my BX23S, NONE have allowed anything past, except air.
same air cleaner, just checked.
Yours may not be seating correctly.

kinda wonder HOW grass clipping are INSIDE the air filter, as they should be sucked into the engine once 'inside'...

The grass clippings are coming in through the tolerances in between the air filter and the tube it slides onto.. or the male/female connections of the air filter. the paper element media is filtering everything

I should’ve taken a photo of it. I got one of those blue paper shop towels wet and wiped the inside to get rid of the clippings.

Man I'd love to see a picture cause the suction of the engine should pull them into the cylinders. it's hard to believe they get past the filter and just stay there....
I've always bought filters from dealer, 'Donadlson' brand....always 'silky smooth' to slide on, kinda sticky but firm....

I'm thinking it happened when taking the filter off. Anything as light as clippings should have been pulled into the cylinder and expelled through the exhaust.

I’m not sure what you’re describing here but I believe that you have some type of plastic canister that holds a cylindrical paper filter that is open on both ends. One end may be closed except for one hole that attaches it to the canister.

The air is pull into the plastic canister and moves around the annular space between the plastic and paper filter. The paper filter should be sealed against the plastic housing at the front and rear ends so all air should flow freely through the paper filter and any large pieces should remain on the outside of the paper filter. Large particles may get lodged in the back end of the annular space outside the paper filter. When removing the paper filter those large particles can then fall into the clean inner part of the paper filter area.

If a large particle gets past the paper filter then it will get sucked into the engine as far as I know. Is there some mesh at the inner end of the plastic housing?

If the paper filter was not installed properly then maybe something could be lodged into the unsealed space at the ends of the filter.

Please describe what you mean in better detail.

I know on my new 1880, I have to seat it in after lining it up, or the cap won’t lock on.

I don't know what type of grass his Kubota is smoking, but it is different than all the other tens of thousands of BX tractors that have been made in the past 20 years. That engine must be hallucinating from the magic mushrooms that are being chopped up and pushed out the side of the deck and ingested by that engine. Paraphrased posting at its best.

I have a new BX1880, 40 hours on it..Doing some research on air filter for it I ordered from Messicks the inner pre filter..
Kubota #3A111-19130 Inner Air Filter. This is the latest update p/n it fits inside the stock filter into the round hole inside the air box.. Nothing will get by it. Air only.

Looks like this, check Messick's for details and their service videos :

I was under the impression the BXs only have an outer filter. Is that the case and this is an optional inner filter?

Whatever’s going on with the OP’s tractor, as long as the filters are installed in the housing correctly, this should address it.

Looking at the parts break down, it only has one filter. I am thinking the "pile of grass clippings" fell in after he removed the filter. As others have stated, any grass that made it pass the filter should have been sucked into the engine when it was running.

Thanks everyone for your input, I sure hope the grass clippings were just from removing the air filter.

I did the 50 service interval myself, and I noticed some slight oil consumption during the first 50 hours.

I put 15w-40 in it and i've noticed oil consumption from 50 to 75 hours. didn't know if thats normal.

I know oil consumption is normal early on in an engine but its odd that its consuming more between 50-75 hours then it was consuming during the first 50 hours.
