Hi all,

I have an l2850, currently the rpm gauge is not functioning and I'm in the process of fixing it. What would be the best way to achieve 540rpm or 1000rpm at the pto with no rpm gauge? How high should I set the hand throttle?
Thanks

Kubota specs max engine rpm at 2600. Find the tick mark on the rpm gauge for pto operation, and make a guess. ie: wide open is known to be 2600, if the pto tick mark is at 2400rpm, then back the throttle a bit and call it good.

If I'm reading his post right, his tach isn't working at all, so he can't get a reading.
Don't know if you are suggesting pushing the throttle to full open and then backing off or not.
I'd be very careful doing that since my L175 will exceed the suggested max RPM if the throttle is wide open.

Don't think so. The way I read it he's suggesting using the wide open rpm vs the pto rpm to estimate where to run. On most that should get you close enough

You could just go full throttle and then pull it back about 20%. It's a guess, but it will work.
Both RJ and 'Cat are on it. Close is good enough, and I probably cheat to the lower side if it's not heavy work.

You can get pretty close just by ear.

Summit1966, you say your RPM gauge is being repaired. If the repair is going to take very long you could order something like this.

What do you need the specific RPM for? Most operations are not too critical. You could just go full throttle and then pull it back about 20%. It's a guess, but it will work.
I bought one of these a couple of years ago for the same reason, used it twice. Was happy as hell, placed it back in the case. Came back to it 3 months later. Did not work - ok - battery was shot, replaced with new batteries and never worked again. I tried everything to get it to work. But for 20 bucks it did work ....twice.

As for the RPM to operate the PTO, most operate about 90% of WOT. Some a bit higher. The BX series is up there at almost 100% of normal WOT.

And as D2Cat said - you dont have to run right dead nuts at 540 pto. But I will tell you this, some things require that speed and some do not.

I wouldn’t worry too much about the rpm with most implements, snowblower, tiller, etc... Around 3/4 is usually good.
I would only be concerned about rpm if you are running a generator, at this point you need to use a voltmeter, vary the rpm up/down until you have 120volts per leg or 240 L-L.

I agree. On a gen, though, if you set it at 120 or 240v 60hz at X engine RPM, as soon as you put some load against it, the RPM drops and so does the voltage and/or hz. So it's not "that" critical. Close is good enough. I've bush hogged before with a 1000 RPM tractor PTO and a 540 RPM cutter without any ill effects other than the engine didn't have enough power to pull it in tall grass.

I'm a little analytical on stuff, so I'd pick up an optical tach of some sort and go with that. Again, close is good enough. I typically bush hog at around 625 RPM at the pto shaft. Under a load it drops back to the mid 500's or a little more.
