My BX24 overheated while using the MMM to the point that the reservoir was boiling! Next day the tractor was totally dead. The coolant reservoir was empty, so refilled with distilled water and some coolant. I also plugged in the battery 30 minutes. Still nothing. Have I 'killed' my tractor? What should I have a mechanic look at? Thanks.

Totally dead as in no dash lights or just won’t crank engine?
Possibly cracked head or blown head gasket.
Also need to diagnose why it overheated. Was radiator clogged on the outside, water pump failure or what?
How long was it run hot?

what does totally dead mean?
when you try to start do you hear any noises like clicking of buzzing
are you getting any electrical to the lights or dash
does the tractor engine turn over (crank) when you try to start
is the engine seized
is there water in the oil
is there oil in the water

Should have popped rad cap, added coolant there first THEN add to overflow tank 1/2way bettwen happy and sad.

Totally dead. No response when I turn the key. It probably overheated because the grill (under the steering wheel) got covered is long, dead grass. I have no way of diagnosing on my own and the nearest dealer is 40 minute drive away.

Okay so we will just start with the basics. Hopefully you have a multimeter or a 12v test light. You can get either one at the hardware store or automotive supply. I recommend the multimeter and a simple one if you’re not that familiar with them. You will just need to measure 12volt DC volt.
Start at the battery and take it to the automotive supply and have it load tested if you have to go buy the meter or test light. If you have the meter then test the voltage at the posts (not the terminals). You should have something about 12 to 13 volts. If not then charge the battery or replace it if it’s older.
Then check the fuses and in particular make sure the larger fuses that protect the whole wiring and are probably not in the fuse box but closer to the battery. Older tractors had fusible links and not fuses for that purpose.
Then clean the battery cables at both ends.
Then check that the fan and alternator belts are still on and tightened properly.
Then tell us what you found and what the tractor is doing afte these steps.

I gotta wonder why would someone keep running a severely overheated machine to the point of destruction then wonder what happened?

same reason some pilots kill their passengers.... 'gotta get home at al costs' mentality ( watch MAYDAY a few times...)
if rad's full(see it at the top...) then losing the overflow isn't a real big problem.
totally dead...electrically, made 'slow blow' fuse is blown or maybe bad battery connections ?
Really need the BX24 wiring diagram to properly diagnose. Maybe free WSM at Kubotabooks ?

Not a troll, Geo, just a poorly worded question. He bought a used tractor and has other post about some implements and tires. Be aware some folks are not a wise and had the life experience as you.
