So right now I have a 2015 kubota L3901DT and love the tractor overall but clutching while trying to do loader and PTO work is a pain in the rear. I originally bought the DT gear drive because at the time I had a bad hip which made it extremely uncomfortable to use the treadle peddle on the HST tractor. Anyway long story short that's no longer the case and now after 382 hours I'm seriously looking at upgrading to a new 2017 L3901HST TLB. Dealer quoted me at $35,705 for L3901 HST tractor with loaded R1 tires, LA525 loader and BH77 backhoe and $17,900 for my trade value. Does this seem like a good deal?

Not sure if it is a good price or not, but what ever it is I will pay the difference again. I will never go back to a geared tractor. HST will do everything a gear tractor will, but will work a lot faster with much less effort. No comparison. Do it, you won't regret it.

Second the motion on HST. Yes, you lose hp at the PTO compared to hear but it's a great excuse to have to go larger !! Ask always do, get the dealer to be aggressive and show your ready if they make you a good deal. The trade in value seems close, but id personally try and get a couple grand out of them. They also know gear tractors tend to sit longer than HST so they may play hardball. Maybe just try and get an implement thrown in the deal.... Good luck and enjoy the mindless HST !

I third the HST motion! I bought mine specifically BECAUSE Kubota makes the most reliable out there. I'm glad I did.

Lot of us old birds out there that have "sticked" for years. Several still swear by it......

However - I would never "buy" another tractor that was geared. I have three Kubota's - all HST, one with a loader. Loader work is a hellva lot easier with HST, hell even cutting grass is better - full sprint when cutting straight, ease up a bit on that tree coming up, and back to full speed again, no clutch no throttle change.....perfect solution.

Several times I will back up to grab a trailer and move it with my 3 - point, with clutch and stick, you are riding the clutch all the time, with HST - you ease back, and if you miscue ( I still do it) you ease back forward again!

Yes - HST is more expensive to buy, cost more in fluid changes, and cost a lot more if they go bad over time........

I'll "stick" with the HST.......... the benefits outway the costs!:)

I would say that the trade price on your tractor is a good price considering what used ones on www.fastline.com are bringing. The price on the new one is MSRP so I would think that you could do a little better on that.

For what it's worth (and quite possibly not much) the acronym DT is often confused to mean that it is a 'standard' or geared transmission. I believe DT really means 'dual traction' or 'double traction'...i.e. 4-wheel drive.

A geared transmission is indicated in many different ways depending on the tractor model. It could be GST for glide-shift or some variant of FS or FST for 'fully synchronized' or in some models there is even an "H" or "M" involved in the acronym for 'Hydraulic" or "Mechanical."

SO many acronyms, so little time. :)

There are different Hst transmissions and different treadle pedals in the different Kubota models. I haven't used an L01 tractor, but I have an L3560 and a B2650. The 3560 has a way better transmission, quieter and smoother, solenoid driven, than the B2650. The B's transmission is noisy, rough, tends to lurch, the throttle is stiff, and is located way up on the dash so you can't conveniently switch that right hand from the loader valve to the throttle. The treadle pedal on the B is not as easy to switch from forward to reverse as the one on the L, it doesn't really fit my size feet. Lifting with the toe for reverse works but you can't easily get enough lift for a speedy reverse. I think the L01s have the same as the B2650. The loader controls are much smoother in the L than the B, easier to control with finesse.

What I am getting around to saying is if you hurt in various places, the 60 series Ls have a number of features that make them easier and more comfortable to use. So my suggestion is that you go and compare a 3560 or 4060 hst to the 3901. Your back, neck, hip, knee, shoulder will thank you.

HST all the way. Especially if you are looking to change forward/rev often(loader work) and on different levels of ground flat vs slopped vs hilly vs pucker. And for the long cruises on flat ground doing hay/bush hogging..you can get a cruise control for the HST..for a small fee..add when you need it.

Seams kinda high to me, I've been dealing on an L3560 with the larger loader, 3rd function and BH92 backhoe and hydraulic thumb for 37,700. I too was about to get geared but between my dad and folks on here I'm going hydro as well

So I did the deal on a new 2017 kubota L3901 HST with LA525 loader, BH77 backhoe, loaded R1 ag tires, cruise control and they offered me $17,900 as trade for my 2015 l3901 DT. Should have the new tractor delivered in a week or so. The other dealer I deal with only wanted to offer me $13-$14 thousand for trade. All in all more than I wanted to spend but I'm happy and can't wait to have a backhoe of my own finally.

Congratulations! Hope you enjoy the new tractor as much as I enjoy mine.

The only complaint I have is the noise of the HST. Something about the frequency really bothers my ears. Keep a pair of ear muffs on the tractor and put them on even when just pulling it out of the garage. But I'm happy to live with that if it is a strong and dependable transmission.

Talked to the dealer yesterday, looks like I should have the new tractor by the end of next week. At least I still have my current L3901 DT to make the waiting process easier lol.
