Hey, a friend of mine has had this tractor for years and last year his brother hit something in the lawn with the 3 pt. hitch mower and it has never been the same. It now is hard starting, VERY low on power, smoking black and has fuel running out at the exhaust manifold joints and spitting out the top of the exhaust pipe. Seems to me like a timing issue but it seems unlikely that it would jump a tooth without having severe issues. Is there a keyway on the fuel pump shaft/gear or is it a press fit like the Bosch P7100 pumps? Thanks guys!

Sounds like it might have done damage to a piston, do a compression test.

Thanks for the replies. I haven't looked at this yet, waiting for the weather to warm up as he does not have a heated shop. Will check for fuel and compression when I get there. Will pull the valve cover too and see if anything there is goofy, maybe a bent push rods or something too. Weather is starting to look nice shortly.

So I got around to looking at the tractor this morning. I pulled off the valve cover to see a push rod missing! Took a look down the head and I could see it wedged in there. When I pulled it out it was in 2 pieces. Whatever they hit sent an awfully hard shock through the entire drivetrain. Ordered 4 new pushrods for it, should run much better next week.
