I have a kx 91-2 kubota excavator that was running fine. Came back next day and won't start. Have never had problems with it starting before. Found water in water separator and fuel filter. Cleaned separator and put on new filter. Still no start. Replaced injectors, replaced injector pump, replaced electric fuel pump, still no start. Anyone have any ideas as to what to check next.

I'm about as sorry a mechanic as you are going to find, but have you tried changing out the engine stop solenoid? I'm going through this with my L48 right now, and the problem is definitely that the solenoid is not actuating, but I also know there is nothing wrong with the new solenoid itself, but some problem in my wiring further up stream. Anyway, if the solenoid is defective, the fuel shut-off rod won't retract, and therefore, no fuel gets to the injectors.

After all the parts you replaced did you bleed all the air out of the fuel system all the way to the injectors?

I used the electric fuel pump to purge the system of air. and then bleed the lines from the injector pump to the injectors. We pulled the solenoid out and turned the key on and off and it operates. I don't know of any other way of checking it. I'm going to drain the fuel out and put in new. Then do a compression check. When bleeding the injectors it acts like it wants to start but won't. Getting a blackish grey smoke out of the exhaust.

How low is the fuel in the tank?

My trackhoe did the same thing to me last year. Running fine then acted like trash in the filter and died. Changed filter, purged line kicked and cussed but nothing worked. It would act like it wanted to start but never would really catch up.

Dumped 5 gallons of fuel in and she fired right up. Wasn't out of fuel but evidently the pickup tube has either cracked or broke off so it runs out around 1/4 tank now.

I would bleed the lines to the injectors again, sounds like you still have air trapped in them. ;)

I have posted before that I have had many Kubota excavators. A problem I have had on several occasions is problems with the water/fuel separator. The small pipes where the fuel line connects to the separator will get loose and suck air. I have never had one that wouldn't start at all but they wouldn't run at all right. Try to move those fittings with your fingers and see if they are loose/movable. If they are, pack JB weld around them, let it cure and see if it will run. If that fixes it, replace the separator. This doesn't happen with the newer machines.

We drained the fuel and put in new. Replaced fuel seperator. Taking a long time getting air out of injector. Anyone know how long it takes to get air out. Been working on that for several weeks.

Turn the key to Run position and let the electric lift pump circulate fuel thru your sedimeter and fuel filter for 15 -20 seconds, then crank the engine. If it does not start, loosen two of the injection lines at the fuel injectors in the cylinder head and crank again. It should start or run fuel out of the lines. Tighten the lines and crank again. If you're not getting fuel out of the injection lines and the sedimeter is full, check your electric fuel shut off solenoid on the injection pump. You can just unplug it and remove the two bolts holding it. Plug the hole where it was with a rag and crank engine. There is a shut off arm on the pump with nothing attached that you can move to kill it.

Hopefully this will save many of us some time & trouble...
There is a lot of water in our fuel nowadays. I've seen operators remove & toss water/ sediment from the clear plastic bowls on multiple engines and when doing so they drop the screen/spring/red disc & o-ring depending on the model. When installed, the bowl has no o-ring & usually gets over tightened & warps the plastic lip in three spots where it meets the aluminum base. It will constantly suck in air, fuel flow is choppy & weak, bleeding is never-ending at pump & injectors and the engine won't start.
This happens often when water in the bowl freezes & everything gets thrown away. Always look carefully at your parts when disassembling & servicing!
