Is the PTO shaft coming off Kubota and JD tractors common 1-3/8?

Basically trying to learn about PTO shafts. Assume I know nothing (because I don't).

I think my L3010 uses a 1-3/8" shaft with 6-splines but I understand these things vary, so 21-splines is used on some equipment. That, and shafts may be larger like 1-3/4-20 splines, etc.

Would someone kindly take a few minutes to educate me a little bit, please? Just a primer.

You are correct, your PTO is 1-3/8". It is the common size for most all tractors. Large tractors (100HP) or so, have another PTO shaft that can replace the 1-3/8". Those are interchangeable. You lesson on PTO's doesn't need any details. What you have is common and fits all category 1 implements needing a PTO.

You understand correctly. Your tractor does indeed have a 1-3/8" x 6-spline PTO shaft.

Of course.....there are other spline sizes and counts on different tractors for various reasons.

However, 1-3/8" x 6-spline is by far...the most common.

If you have a mid PTO it will have a finer spline. All of the rear PTOs on compact and farm tractors will be the 1-3/8" 6 spline.

Old Machinist . . . thanks for your observation regarding the mid-mount PTO spline. As it happens, my belly-mount mower deck is sitting on the forklift awaiting receipt of replacement blades and belt. This, so I may pull maintenance before the season begins. I had noticed they were a finer spline - but - it hadn't occurred to me to wonder about the spline count.

Anyway, I'm new to tractors, what else can be driven off a mid-PTO?

Snow blower, Broom, and just about any other front mount PTO powered implement.
Also note: The rear PTO spins at 540 RPM, where the mid PTO spins at or about 2500 RPM.

If you hadn't mentioned snow blower and broom, they wouldn't have crossed my mind. Any others implements off the top of your head? Just curious.

Anyway, thanks for the info regarding RPM.

The 1-3/8”, 6 spline 540RPM rear shaft was industry standardized by American Society of Agricultural Engineers in 1938. It is usually used on equipment rated for 85-90HP or less. Above that power rating, a 1-3/8” 21 spline 1000RPM shaft is used and for high power requirements, a 1-3/4” 20 spline 1000RPM shaft is used.

Sounds like military standards to me...
