1990 M8580. I need to replace the hydraulic oil due to contamination. All kinds of opinions out there about what oil to use. Have discarded all those and looking for some solid advice from people that know. Thanks

I would think that UDT would fill the bill - or anything that is equal to it.

There are dozens of hydraulic oils that meet the kubota UDT standard, all of them will work fine.

Not sure if you want to go the UDT2(semi syn) route or even perhaps the S-UDT2 (syn)route, both are a little better oil, but will run up the price tag a good bit!

I don't know anything about the syns. Unless it is a lot more expensive isn't it better for the tractor? Hope I'm not showing my ignorance.

You will get many opinions on what is best to use.

For me I use S-UDT2 the full synthetic. I do not run my tractor but 50 hrs a year and the change interval is 400 hours on my machine. That equals a hydro oil change about every 5 to 6 years so to me I want the best I can put in my 20K plus machine for that time period.

Does it really make a difference especially for me since mine is a geared machine? I don't know but I do know it is peace of mind for me and a once every 5 to 6 year investment. I do plan to change the filter every year going forward and top off what I lose when doing so.

Good luck in your decision.

Lot of us love synthetics, it just works better and longer, some however do not buy into it, feel that the oil of the past are just as good as oils of the future.

Oil - aint oil!

And do not believe things you read without having good backing.

Many said that synthetics made oil seals leak........that is not true at all!!!
The thicker oils just did not get by the worn seals, the thinner synthetics did leak due to the worn seal itself!

Tractor supply (if you have one near by) and wal-mart both sell a UDT compatible oil. I think you are good need a good bit of it ! :D

Depending on what is offered in your area, you can use a Multi Purpose mineral oil. Texaco and Mobil offer a UDT #32 oil. Or you can use a Turbine Oil 32. All previous posts are exactly true as to what to use. I found it amusing in my shop manual it specifically states : "Never use automotive brake oil"....which leads me to wonder someone must have done so numerous times to get that entered into a shop repair manual!!

tend to agree with you about synthetics. I run some big tractors on the farm and we use conventional oil only because we have bulk oil tanks that get filled and conventional is more cost effective and we do regular oil change intervals so when you go through as much as we do, saving thousands is necessary. Smaller equipment gets synthetic that we use only during seeding and harvest and then sit the rest of the time, and on teardown, we see that there is less bearing wear than there used to be when using conventional oil. Maybe coincidental, but over the years we see less bottom end wear with the synthetics. But as long as we change our conventional oil equipment regularly and twice during heavy use in seeding and harvest, we dont have any issues.

Did you do a search on here for oils? This topic has been talked over and over and there is some great threads on here about it.

Yes about 12 1/2 gallons that's why I only want to do it once. Thanks for all the help.
If you only want to do it once do it right. The tractor should be factory filled with SUDT-2 so if you want the same level of protection and performance don't cut corners. It might be different if it was changed several times a year but that's not the case.

You're not talking about a $1000 lawn mower, it's a $60k tractor. Why risk a investment that big over a few dollars worth of oil.

I could be wrong, but I don’t believe SUDT-2 was around in 1990.

I think any quality oil brand that meets the Kubota UDT spec will be fine. I would stay away from store brand oils.

I personally use Chevron THF1000 or 1000THF. I can remember which it is.
