I'm new to the forum and hope that I can get answers to several questions. I have a G1800.
1. I need to replace the drive shaft between the engine and the hydrostatic transmission. Where can I find detailed instructions and illustrations to help me remove the tractor body to make the repair?

2. I'm confused about the various manuals. Is a service manual the same as a repair manual? I need a repair manual. Can I get a download version or do I have to purchase a hard copy? If I download a manual will it be easy to navigate?

3. Where would you suggest I buy the parts I need and do you recommend I replace any other parts while I'm in there?

Finally, I would certainly welcome any tips and advice from anyone who has completed this repair. Thank you.

2. I'm confused about the various manuals. Is a service manual the same as a repair manual? YES and this also answers question 1. . Can I get a download version or do I have to purchase a hard copy? Both available If I download a manual will it be easy to navigate? It is same as Paper Manual. It is just a PDF copy.

3. Where would you suggest I buy the parts I need and do you recommend I replace any other parts while I'm in there? See the Sticky at top of page for this and even the manual question
....Thank you.

Hi PatDaddy. If you're somewhat mechanically able, replacing the drive shaft is not too difficult. You'll have to strip the machine of all the sheet metal and then get at it from the top. It takes a while but most of the time will be spent figuring out how everything comes apart and then goes back together. Hint: take pictures.

Replacing the drive shaft itself is pretty simple once you've got it exposed.

As far as manuals, I haven't seen a downloadable version. Just dig in and ask for help if you get stumped.

You'll want to check the plastic hydro fan while you're in there (it's on the rear of the drive shaft). Also, if your steering gear box is worn it would be a good time to replace it. That's about it as far as "routine" stuff goes. For parts, watch eBay. You might also post a "wanted to buy" ad on the Buy/Sale/Trade section of this website.

Good luck!

I found it much easier to pull the engine. Then pull the rear fender to get access to the shaft bolt(s). Loosen the floorboard, but don't have to remove it. Once the fender and engine are off, which takes me about an hour at the most, the shaft slides out the front in 30 seconds or less. Doing it this way also gives you the opportunity to power wash everything, as the years of pouring diesel (and spilling) into the tank will create a big mess at the back side of the machine, and this is a great opportunity to wash it all down. I am doing mine once a year. The fins on the HST are there to cool it, and with a bunch of dirt/clippings built up on it, it won't cool as well.

Watch the splines on each end. Very common for folks to forget about the grease fittings. They wear out and it vibrates when the splines wear, which takes out the U-joints. I had to do my 1900, replaced the front yoke and stub, and the rear yoke, and both u-joints.
