Yup, you are kinda "sol" for OSB for now. 50+ years ago we used 1X6's on the diagonal for sheeting.
Yep my grandparents house was sheeted like that on the walls and roof, you would go broke trying to do that now days even before the covid price hike.

Sawing 32 board feet of 1X6's from your logs would be $11.20. Folks going back to basics is why I'm so busy.

Nailing up eight 1X6's instead of a 4X8 sheet may be more labor intensive but at least one person can easily do it. Of course for sheeting a building the 1X6's would be probably 12' for ease of handling.

Makes me appreciate the big stacks of 1 x whatever of ash stickered in my barn. If I could find the right woodworker I could have my cupboards the way I want them. They were going to be paneling but another undone project. What I don't have is 8 ft fence posts. A 6 by 6 was almost $50 at Lowes.

We are being held hostage because, at least here, there is no log shortage.
At this point I think you are correct. Now I will say last fall, for about 2 months, our three HD stores had NO wood. I mean that every 'bin' was either empty, cracked or warped wood.

There also was not a shortage of toilet tissue, but there was.

During the 80's here the USDA's "Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) paid landowners to plant Pine trees. Now we have thousands of acres of mature harvestable trees so there is a log glut. Landowners are being paid virtually nothing for their harvest so one would think that the lumber prices would follow.

I have no answers, only questions which is why I said above that we the lumber buying public were being held hostage.

On the flip side, I as a part time portable sawmill operator am benefiting because landowners with logs that they can not sell are having them sawn into their usable lumber. Now at 77+ years old, I am too flipping old to still be doing this sort of thing.

And I would charge you $8.40 to saw it from your log.
I think I got robbed by the guy sawing my 6 black walnut trees. A long story, but initially he said since I just wanted enough boards for a table and some flooring, that the remaining logs would pay for the work. Didn’t. I think I wrote a check for $1500. Three big logs left over on his place when I went to pick up my boards. The logs were big enough it took a crane to get them out. The most I was offered by log buyers was about 2K after they were on the ground, and so I thought I’d try to use them. My table is therefore really expensive.....and a friend made it for me In exchange for a couple of boards.

I charge for the scaled lumber that is sawn.

Any buying/selling of logs or lumber is another transaction and has nothing to do with the sawing. The logs should be scaled and the buying/selling prices established before any work is done.

Time to bring this back to the top. Decided to wrap the camp in T1-11 for now and get moving on with the build. I will stain it soon and when lumber prices gets back to somewhat normal I will put the log siding on top of the T1-11.

I was kinda wondering where you were??

I put T1-11 on our Cabin in 1995 and it's still going strong. Never even needed re-staining.

I have used it before and was satisfied with it. Eventually when prices get back to normal I will go over it with some log siding. That’s the look the boss really wants.
