What do think the reasoning is for Kubota to use the 21.6 HP engine (D902) in the BX23S, which is less HP than they install in the BX2680 which gets the 24.8 HP (D1005) engine. Certainly, the BX23S isn't underpowered, however, the 3.2 additional HP would be nice to have when digging with the backhoe, or pushing to fill the bucket with a load of dirt. To me, it is strange that they wouldn't use the same engine in both machines.
I also noticed in the specifications that the BX23S is slower than the BX2680... 8.4 vx 6.3

in one word....
'marketing'

the more products a company can offer, the more people can be sold to. '
you could ask 'Why don't ALL vehicles have power windows, trailer hitches, granny 1st gears ?"

Sure the BX23S is 'underpowered' compared to other units, but it does what I need it to do.For big jobs, I have aa 75T excavator a phone call away.

All that "extra" power really is not usable on the hoe or the fel ....... where as the psi and pump are the same!

I bet is cost very little between the two engines to "make" yet there is a considerable difference in the two engines when you buy them!

HP will do nothing for backhoe performance unless it changes hydraulic flow or the psi ratings of the cylinders involved. In most cases it doesnt...and even if it did a 3HP change is going to provide no noticeable difference to the operator. 3 HP will provide no noticeable difference in performance to an operator. It needs to be about a 30% difference to notice it in the seat.

Pushing to fill the bucket should be a function of weight, not HP. Your tires should spin before the machine bogs down with a normally outfitted tractor.

Speed is certainly a consideration, but at mentioned I bet it boils down to marketing and cost.

They recently changed the verbage or testing methods for offroad engines and Kubota is posting these new “accurate” numbers in their literature. I believe its in response to EPA mandates, so tractor manufacturers are posting engine specs at different RPMs then in the past?

A- Market analytics. The Japanese are (one of) the best in the world at that.

Other responses are correct as well but refer back to A.

It is because the BX23S is the BX2380 tractor rather than the BX2680.
