BX Oil and HST Filter wrench's

Anyone have a set of oil filter wrench's that work really great? Im a new BX owner and will have to add to my collection of oil filter wrench's...seems everything i own has its own that works best.

Are you talking the cap style? I've always used a large pair of channel locks if I couldn't break them loose by hand. Seems to work fine for me.

Yeah i have a collection of various sized cap wrench's that work well but won't fit my BX. The pliers should work fine for the HSt filter but not sure about the oil filter....was gonna try and find a cap style so i could get it off without removing the engine side panels.

I vote for the pliers. I could not find a filter "cap wrench" for one of my vehicles and the pliers did the job. Also takes the lids off of canning jars.

So many after market guys are selling filters with a nut welded onto the end. Soon all the oem's will start doing it to keep up.

They do work good, but you don't need two tools, to use the filter pliers. Just grab, and twist.

I generally use the old strap style wrenches... For difficult filters I wipe the filter off, and rough the filter up with sandpaper to get the friction up.
For the occasional impossible filter I use a chain wrench.

What I use maybe 20% of the time. The 80% tool is a screwdriver and a hammer and I hammer the screwdriver through the filter can and wrench it off with the screwdriver. Kills 2 birds with one stone, gets the filter off and drains it at the same time....:eek:

I'm into getting it done. besides the filter goes in the scrap can anyway (after I crush it.)

I have a wrench like that with the chain segments - grabs much better.

I ended up taking the replacement filters with me to the store and trying them in a couple different style filter wrenches. Found one I liked that worked and took it home. I do like the strap wrenches though. Works on them all. I used to have an old leather belt that I would use to spin filters off my wife's old Ford Fiesta (81). Had to go from the top. Had about an inch between the firewall and the exhaust blocked access from the bottom...

i ended up using the oil filter pliers, worked great. Was able to get the oil filter off without removing the engine side panels. The HST filter was even easier and a cap wrench wouldn't of fit with the HST fan guard in the way...Pliers are the way to go with a BX. Thanks for the input everyone.

One should be very careful about driving a screwdriver through a filter that is screwed onto an aluminum thread. Had a customer try that on his BX hydraulic filter and it broke the nipple off of the transaxle cover. Turned out to only be a $2200.00 mistake.

When I lived in Colorado, I had a room mate that drove a screw driver through the oil filter of his mid 90's Mazda B2200 pickup (Basically a Ford Ranger). Apparently he screwed the filter on with a filter wrench and couldn't get it off, so out came the screw driver. Well, the screwdriver tore through the filter completely, instead of turning it off. The next few days were absolute hell, trying to get the remaining parts of the filter off the block. Man, what a nightmare that turned in to. Haven't drove a screwdriver into a filter since that episode.:eek:

A Rigid Aluminum Pipe Wrench works good on those stubborn filters
