I cleared the snow from my driveway the other night after work and put the tractor back into the garage. No issues during the job nothing hit the windshield and it wasn't particularly cold. The garage is unheated but generally stays around -2 or -3 C(27 to 30 F)

The next day I went to start the tractor to finish clearing the drive and take care of the neighbors and found the front windshield totally spider webbed, see attached pictures. The hole in windshield happened when I closed the door Has anybody ever had this happen?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Cheers

Not in a Kubota, but in other brand tractors and construction equipment. My wife’s Dodge Durango rear window did that last winter. Shut the door and the rear window blew out.

Did that to my M9 cab traxtor years ago, closed the door and blam, it exploded. Had a small pinch bar sticking out on the floor and when I closed the door, it hit the bar and that was that.

Replaceable, you bet. Cheap, not hardly. Almost 1000 bucks US for the door. I suspect your side pane will be a lot less and I'd check with your insurabce carrier, most cover glass like that.

I carry a $1000.00 deductible so I ate the cost and I'm very careful now.

Good news is you can do it yourself (install). Will be a dealer only item

Any type of defect in the glass can cause this to happen. Could have been something that happened months ago and with the additional stress caused by temperature changes exceeded the limit.

You're lucky the cost is reasonable.

Using Messick's for costing...

10.1 - replaces #6C430-72310
6C430-72313 $263.12 5-7 business days 1 to equal #6C430-72310

Let us know how the installation goes.

I have a new windshield on order here should be in tomorrow $413 with tax plus installation.

I was kind of thinking it would be some kind of overpressure when i closed the door but wasn't sure, guess i'll have to make sure to close it gently from now on.

Cheers

There are experts who spend their whole careers studying tempered glass failure mechanisms.

This just to give you an idea of how complicated the subject can be.
There are many other reasons for failure!.

Both tempered doors failures were caused by spherical NiS contaminant particles. One particle has a diameter of 180 microns. The other particle has a 100 micron diameter. In addition, both particles were centered 2.3 mm from the edge of the glass. This failure mechanism is well known and has been previously documented. The NiS particle forms during glass manufacturing. It is created by contamination in the fuel (S) and nickel from tools used to handle the hot glass. Initially it is one crystal structure; however, over time it will change to a less dense crystal structure that creates local stresses and cracking. The rate of occurrence varies with respect to the manufacturer. NiS contaminants are said to be a problem with fully tempered glass

NiS stands for: A nickel sulfide inclusion, occuring during the process of manufacturing glass

That is the second B2650 windshield Ive seen spiderweb like that. The first was also on this site, stored outdoors. Guy thought it was morning dew on glass but it was completely cracked like yours. Im sure thermal dynamics is playing a role in this...

For your sake and mine ( and my wallet) I certainly hope it don't. The little glass 'pebbles' went everywhere in my cab, under the air rise seat frame, under the floor mat, every crack had glass pebbles.

I see there is replacemebt glass on Flea Bay now but I'd be very cautious about buying it. It has to fit just so in the gaskets or it will shatter immediately. Like a car windshield, it has to 'float' or it shatters.

I leave the rear glass on mine "on the latch" so it's open just a bit at the bottom.

Don't know if it helps, but it can't hurt and the heater is more than capable of dealing with it.

I ran that by my dealer and the glass installer and they both didn't believe it would make any difference but I'm not so sure so when it's cold and frosty I crack the side window just a bit before closing the door.

My dad does the same thing with the rear windows that fold out.

OP, I wonder if it***8217;d be covered under warranty. Seems like a silly failure if indeed nothing was done to it damage wise.

Ouch, My dealer did me a solid and covered my deductible (250.00) by working it into the transportation.

Gary the guy who replaced the glass for me who I know quite well said it was not unusual for this to happen.

I do the same with my M9 cab. I leave one of the side windows (they swing out) open all the time and when I start it (cold winter) in the barn, the heater is on low so it warms the interior as the engine warms. Neither do I want to pay almost a grand for a new glass door. Did the install myself but still cost a bundle. It is tempered safety glass but it's still brittle,

Tinting the glass will prevent the explosion and prevent making the mess but it will not prevent cracking. Food for thought.
