The boys car got hit by some druggies stealing cats. Cut the silencer pipe clean through and got spooked while cutting the front pipe so maybe an inch gap there. Silencer was just replaced a few weeks back. At least we are looking at 30 bucks and a couple hours to repair. His friend lost 2 cats and his bill is 2400 for his Ford. I ended up trying some night temp exhaust epoxy in the cut up front and will put a band clamp over it as well. Like to find those guys in action and deliver a few well placed kicks in the groin area to let them know my displeasure.

You're right, the penalty for altering emissions is probably far higher than the crime of theft.

Not sure if it is still like this, but when we first got carpool lanes, the fine for driving in the carpool lane illegally was higher than the fine for a DUI.

A few years ago, a guy at work had his converter cut off in the middle of the afternoon about 60’ from the building. There were marks on the asphalt where they had dragged a floor jack around to jack the car up. Apparently, the thieves know which cars have the most valuable converters because they chose his car over several 4wd trucks in the lot that wouldn’t need a jack.

Kicks, yea with 12Ga with bird shot. One or two should do it.
Bird shot? You’re more forgiving than I am. 00 buck, be done with it. I might even consider slugs. Won’t stop “em all, but the ones it does stop won’t do it again.

Another way to fix the problem is to require the VIN number of the vehicle at the scrap yards along with proof of ownership. One car, two cats max, and the db should be shared like the NCIS system. Dude comes in with the same VIN , instant lock-up and wait for the cops. No trial, don’t need one, just a hammer and a lot of boulders and 20 years to repay the debt to society. Oatmeal for breakfast with no milk or sugar, dry bread for lunch, a piece of salt pork and dried beans for dinner, IF he/she behaves like model citizens

Does anybody really think the scrapyard doesn't know where all these cats they are buying are coming from? Same guy comes in and plunks down 10 or 15 cats on the counter every week and it doesn't raise any flags?

They finally nabbed a guy in my area that admitted to stealing over 80 cats in a four month period. I hope they busted the scrap dealer too.

need a new law. that's 100% enforced....
YOU get caught stealing cats, YOUR right hand gets amputated with YOUR saw

it might slow down the thefts....

not all people taking these converters to scrap yards are thieves though. We have a legit buyer that comes around the local shops and buys old converters and dpfs.

The real problem is drug use and abuse. Why people are so stupid to get hooked on them is beyond me. If there were no buyers the cross border traffic would go down, the criminal gangs in the south American countries would go out of business.

I grew up in Saudi Arabia (Dad worked for Oil Company)

The Arabian law says things like:
  • Theif gets his hand cut off
  • Rapist gets something else cut off
  • Speak ill-will about the King, lose your tongue
  • Public beheadings

..... there is a VERY LOW crime-rate in that country.

Not all thieves are on drugs and not all drug users are thieves.

Another bad generalization is the all drug users are bad people. I would bet most folks here may not know they know one 🤔

The real problem is drug use and abuse.
Theft has been a thriving industry since long before drugs. Cro magnon "second story" man pilfered his neighbour's bone fishhooks.

I agree that recreational drug use is a bane of society, but I don't see how all theft is necessarily the result of drug use. In fact, I'm inclined to doubt that the stereotypical skid-row druggie who steals to score his next hit could afford a battery-operated sawzall in the first place. That is not to say that the thieves don't use drugs (including alcohol), but I suspect the use is usually ancilliary to the thefts, not the driving force.

flags raised for sure, but money talks. and those that need sorting out in the afterlife, sure add stress to the rest of us in the current life.

If they're on skid-row, you're probably correct. However, on their way to skid row they steal enough to acquire, or steal the tool itself, to cut off components that allow them the funds they need to live an they do. They actually cut the panels off of metal building and remove whatever is in there. Their brain doesn't relate to getting caught and incarcerated, they just want something right now!
