Tried starting tractor after winter. Turned it over a lot and steady. Now I only get a click at the magnetic switch on starter. Battery new and charged now. Changed magnetic switch and still no start. Anybody can help me? Thanks

When you say you replaced the magnetic switch, do you mean you replaced the solenoid on the starter?

If you did you either have a bad starter or possibly a bad positive connection on the starter. ;)

Yes it would be the solenoid. The plastic lever in the starter that the solenoid plunger hooks on to is very loose... lots of play...don't know if that is supposed to be like that

I know I probably screwed it up when I was turning it over trying to start. Was turning it over for 15 to 20 seconds at a time a lot. Ended up buying a new battery and continued turning it over until the starter stopped turning over

or in the replacement - the ground or hot are not connecting well.....

first thing - volt meter at battery ......12.6 at rest?
test on the hot side of solenoid - then on switched side while key is turned.

Last thing - throw 12 volt STRAIGHT to starter ....make sure in neutral and such - that will tell you if starter is bad....

took the starter out and apart. Looks pretty burnt up in there. Think it is the starter?

Based on what you looked at ......does it have a burned smell? Laminate cooked? I would say that it is !:D:)

Put it back together - place on floor with jumper cables and give it a tap on a battery......if it jumps....it works....when you see smoke......too late !:D

20-30 seconds crank time,3-5 minutes cool down. Exceeding that will burn up a starter in very short order.
If it looks burned out, likely it is.

Sounds like the starter issue is worked out.

Why were you having trouble getting it started to begin with?

Thanks for all the help. Gonna buy a starter off ebay for 169. Then Im gonna rebuild old starter. Brushes are shot. Didnt start the tractor all winter. Put a salamander under it and warmed it up real good . That usually works. This year left very little fuel in it for the winter and i think i had water in it. Had puffs of smoke coming out but just would nt go. Learned a lesson thanks again

Best practice but especially for storage is to have the fuel tank completely full to the neck. If there is empty space in the tank as the weather heats and cools it will cause condensation inside the tank. As soon as the water is in the system it settles to the bottom and then as soon as you try to start it nothing but straight water goes to the pump.

I it was me I would install a new fuel filter (bleed the air off), then turn the little knob where the fuel line hooks to the injector pump fully to the left (counter clockwise) and then try the starter. Unless you have other issues it should start up fairly easy. After it starts turn the knob back fully to the right. All diesels should have one of these knobs, it would make starting after filter changes so easy.
