Been reading a little about Kubota history and ended up looking at Yanmar as well. Most sites are quick to say that a John Deere is really a green YANMAR, unless I'm reading to much into that. Weird then that the two top tractor company's are HQd in Osaka, Japan; even the same city! Just wondering what others think about that or perhaps what I'm missing.

Think JD long ago used yanmar engines though maybe labeled as JD.... or maybe they purchased yanmar tooling or the likes in the early days..... but pretty sure now they are all their own thing. Probably have not had any association; be it remote or close association with Yanmar, in decades.

If your point was that they are both from the same area, that not all that unusual as it is one of the largest industrial era's of it's time.
they were both founded over 100 years ago.

And John Deere still use Yanmar engines and other components in all of there compact tractors I do believe. ;)

John Deere farmed out their compact tractor business. My understanding is that the 50 series was made by Yanmar. I'm not sure about their current models. They do still make their big tractors, along with their harvesting, tillage, and large industrial equipment. Last I heard, they were still headquartered in Waterloo.

To clarify, I'm amazed at how well the Japanese do on making compact tractors. So well that John Deere says why reinvent the wheel on this. Just paint Yanmars green. I guess the Osaka component is similar to the way Detroit was in the USA for many years.

I had an old 80's Yanmar. Was my first diesel. Old, beat, former farm rig but it always started, it always ran and still had tons of life left after I got rid of it. Both my Kubotas since that tractor have been "cleaner" so that's why I'm partial, but that Yanmar was a real work horse !!

My 70's Ford F-1700 was "Made In Japan" as well.

Japanese farms are often on very small plots of land and an average American machine is way too large. Plus, diesel fuel is expensive in Japan and efficiency is very important.

What I find hilarious is, when Kubota started importing their equipment in the early days, many here in the USA couldn't see the market for a small frame, low hp tractor. Kubota proved them wrong. While it took awhile to get off the ground, nowadays, the small tractor segment is a big chunk of the overall tractor market. When you look at utility vs floor space required for storage, The B Series is one of the most incredibly useful pieces of equipment ever created.

I live in an area where almost every other property is a horse ranch. My neighbor across the street has a small New Holland 25hp HST the wife runs all over the place. Another friend has a Deer (with the wonderful Yanmar). The guy across the other street has a B Series Kubota. Thanks to Japanese quality and innovation for making these wonderful machines a reality.
