Just throwing this out there, but what do you think this years winter will be like? Upstate NY we've seen some pretty good snow this year, not really cold, but a decent amount of snow. I'm just South of the Tug Hill area, and we catch our fair share of lake effect snow and storms combined.

I'm thinking this coming winter, we will have another year of heavy snow up my direction.

Nothing to base this on, just seems like we've had some cold winters with light snow falls the past few years and this past year we had more snow than the cold temperatures.

I know, blasphemy talking about winter during the beginning of the nice weather. :)

Well last year in the late summer these guys predicted a colder and snowier winter for Michigan and North Idaho. They were half right...ask NIW about last winter. As for MI my neighbor and I each bought new little cabbed tractors, being sick of snowblowing for hours the preceding 2 winters, which were awful. We had the warmest winter, for some months, on record. Only got to use snowblower on the tractor 3 times. So anybody's guess. The NOAA guys are looking at El Nino possible conditions.

There's a big snowmobile community up here, and some of the predictions I have seen them post say there is going to be another year of above average snow fall for the upcoming winter.

The past few winters were cold as hell (sub-zero for extended period of time) with what I would consider very little snow.

This past winter we had a good amount of snow but it never got subzero temps like the previous winter. Seems like we get the winters with the heavy snow in cycles. Seems like...

My first winter in new house, 14-15 was brutal. Sub zero cold snaps, tons of snow and wind like Ive never dealt with.

15-16 was a joke.
16-17 was a joke until February, then we got pummeled.

I dont really care about the temperature, but the unrelenting wind I can't take. Constant 20mph westerly winds gusting to 35 for 4 months straight. I almost sold the place after that.

Arizona was "cold" this year. Great Fall until the usual rains started in November. Lots of precip (a good thing) with almost 6 inches of rain before December here at the house. I think a bunch of that was two hurricanes that came up from Mexico. (I always do my "hurricane dance" in late summer but it didn't work last summer -until later.)

In mid January the temps dropped and we held off on planting our front yard for fear we'd get a hard freeze. It never came but, my barn stayed in the high 40's for days thanks to overcast and overnight temps in the mid-30's. As SF said, the El Nino seemed to be funneling moisture across CA our way but, much of it missed us in later Spring. Denver had a foot of snow only a couple weeks ago. The melting has begun around Tahoe with flood warnings up.

We are hoping for a good active monsoon season this summer. That moisture comes from Texas when the winds reverse after the jetstream moves way north into Canada. After six weeks or so, things dry out and the westerly winds resume in mid-September.

Anybody with a radiation detector notice a rise in radioactivity as a result of the Fukashima fallout? Reports are that they seen a spike in readings along the CA-OR coastline and now further inland. Hard to believe a lot of what you read online. One guy in MA is reporting a higher background reading. My wife bought a detector to measure our property, which has uranium deposits. I need to find that danged thing and try it out.

For some reason we have not had any snow for the past 3 winters, come to think of it we only had 4 frosts this past winter [emoji13]***129315;[emoji13]

Here in N. Idaho we set overall high precipitation records for march and April for any year on record. According to some of the old timers the next two winters will be milder, but hold on for 2020! It should set more records than this last winter.

I don't know what has changed in weather prediction, but they are awful now. Yesteday- 20% chance of a stray shower. At 4PM, we got rain coming down in sheets, for 30 straight minutes. Thursday last week, 98% chance of rain for the evening, so we decided not to go watch one of our youth group members play soccer. Never did anything- didn't even cloud up.
I know that weather is a prediction, not a knowledge. But, I don't put much stock in tomorrow's forecast, much less long range predictions. I'm with BAP- next Spring will tell us what this Winter will be like.

And long range weather prognosticator is nothing more than ,,,like the man said,,,, someone making a WAG.
Lets just enjoy the summer, tics, chiggers, blackflys, skeeters, ground hog hunts, hay fever, sunburn, bikinis , cold beer, bikes, fast cars, air shows, crickets, family ,picnics, fire works, lighting bugs and fresh maters right out da garden. See its all fun ;)

Enjoy what's going on now, and prepare for what's coming. I've got 7 cords cut, split and stacked, and just spent the last couple hours stacking the rest of the logs with the Grapple on the Kubota. Now I'm good for a couple years of wood, I might do some next year. If it didn't just start raining, I would go fir a ride around the lake, but we're supposed to get lightning, wind and rain. Kinda takes the fun out of a pleasant drive
