Ive looked and looked but cant seem to find anything to compare to what I have for determining a value.
I have two 20" diam x 8' long creosote utility posts.
Im trying to figure some kind of value if you were to buy and/or sell them.
I was thinking they should be worth 100.00 to 150.00 each ? Too high ?
Any ideas would be appreciated or possibly a more appropriate forum for this type of question.
Thanks

IMHO anyone who knows what creosote really is probably makes their own thus would not be interested in buying short post... . wait.... those are 8'? Pic makes them look like 2or3'. ok then at that long they may be worth more than I was thinking. Not sure about price though

sorry just wasted everyones time:p

Thanks for trying and concerns anyway.
I guess its creosote. You can smell it strong when you get close to them. Ive had these sitting off the ground on blocks for close to 20 years. Its the older creosote stuff that they used for the older utility poles. I understand that todays creosote mixture is different.
These are big boys at 20" diameter and 8 feet long.

Out here, I doubt you could get anyone to even haul them away, let alone pay anything for them. :(

Around here, you can get something for long ones that one could use for a light pole. Not 20" diameter ones, though.

Those, not so much ......

They could be cut into 1 ~ 1.5 inch slabs and chopped up to use for kindling. It would take years to burn them up that way but you said they have already been sitting around for near 20 years anyway. If they have not been put to good use by now the only other thing to do is give them away or burn them as kindling. I don't think it would be legal to burn them as regular firewood but IIRC they can be cut up and used for kindling legally. Of course that may also depend on your locality.

Here you can get all you want for free if the power company is putting in a new line. Most are western red cedar. I have 15 or 20 untreated cedar ones that were put in the ground in 1942 and they are around 30 inches at the base and these were about 50 foot long. I sawed lumber out of about 30 of them for a greenhouse. If you look at the end where it was in the ground it will tell you the year it was installed the length of the pole and the type of wood the pole is

They may have a bit of value to someone with the right landscaping project, either whole or in pieces. You would have to find that particular person, though. As for any structural application, they are mighty short in relation to the diameter.

Thanks for all the help. I was able to call two different utility pole/post companies and from the value of what they sell in comparison then these are considered valuable only if as already mentioned, considering the application because of their length. Other than someone needing them as an entrance/gate application or similar then they are not very valuable. Again I guess they are worth whatever someones willing to pay for them...not much.
Thanks again.

Find someone needing some corner post for a long run of fence. They'll hold a lot of pressure if you can get them in the ground 36-40". Take them to the local farm/cattle auction. Someone there will know what to do with them. List them on CL under "farm and garden".

I was going to suggest Craigslist Farm & Garden or Materials. List them for $25 each or something, pick a number, give a discount if they buy both. Let them sit there for two weeks and lower the price $5. When you get to zero, post them in Free and see if someone can use them.

I wouldn't recommend burning creosote as it does not burn cleanly and gives off some pretty noxious soot. JMHO.

Creosote burns way too hot, very uncontrollable and dirty, even as kindling it could get out of hand way too fast, creosote in a natural form is what burns houses down!
