Hi guys....I'm new here so please bear with me. I have a Kubota B7800 tractor and it starts and runs ok, till you try to go forward or backward......then it chokes down and dies. Let off the accelerator and it perks right back up.....could this be a dirty fuel filter? I know there are several safety switches on the tractor, but it just doesn't seem like it would be a switch causing this.....any info would be greatly appreciated!

Normal quiz,

how many hours on the tractor?
how long since the last service?
did it just start this all at once or has it been building up to what it is now?
Any other info you can think of may help us try to help you.

The tractor has 293 hours on it.....the last service date I'm thinking was last year. We had it taken in to fix some safety switches.....it's possible it was the year before. The issue did not just start. We would be using the tractor and it would develop this problem....sometimes. Didn't always do this. I tapped on the fuel bowl with a screwdriver last night, started it up and gave it a try.....it didn't try to choke down till I put it in reverse and tried to move. The last time we had it out, trying to work, it would not move forward without having this problem.....oh, by the way, I can see sediment and trash floating around in the bowl....I will definately check that parking brake also.

Fuel filter is a distinct possibility especially if it's never been changed at those kinda hours. Try that first and if that doesn't do it we'll look somewhere else. If the filter doesn't do it try hooking up a pto driven implement if you can and spin it up with the tractor in neutral. If it bogs down with that we know it's an engine problem and not a transmission problem.

If he can't get the tractor to move, then he won't be able to drive around and back up to an impliment and see if its the tranny or engine.

I would definitely change the fuel filter- that's money well spent. If you can get it to a pto-driven implement, try that. You need to determine whether it is driveline related, or engine related. Can you rev it up? Does it stumble when you throttle it up?
You could also have an obstruction in the fuel tank. I doubt it is the parking brake, because it isn't doing it all the time, and I can't imagine that you wouldn't notice the brakes applied over a period of time.
Welcome to OTT, by the way!

Hi I had a similar problem with a gasoline engine, after taking the carb. apart several times and knowing my fuel supply wasn't the problem I found a mouse nest in the muffler. Good luck!

With it idling properly and so many times it turns out to be safety switch stuck or not getting proper contact, I'm betting its one of them.

Doubtful cause but check the air inlet for blockage such as dirty filter or rat's nest

I have a B7800 that choked down while moving or operating the FEL. Dealer told me it was probably the fuel filter. When I changed it, it was plugged pretty bad, and I have had no problems since.

Ok guys, I cleaned out the filter.....I have not had the opportunity to get somewhere to buy a new one, just a busy few days past....took the old filter out, blew it out with a compressor, cleaned the bowl, etc......the tractor worked fine after that. Got back from a weekend trip, fired the tractor up again....it has the same problem. I may be able to get it to an implement to hook it up and try that....I had thought maybe about draining the fuel tank and cleaning it out real good. I don't know if there is an additive for diesel fuel like there is gasoline to get rid of any moisture......rat's nest.....oh my, I hope it's not that!

When you cleaned the filter out did it have black looking stuff about like wet baby powder in the filter and bowl?

I don't know- a rat's nest is easy to take care of, and free, if it didn't chew anything.
I would highly suggest cleaning the tank real well, checking and cleaning the intake at the bottom of the tank, and get you a couple of filters. How did the current filter look?
There are additives that you can get, but it would help to know what you are dealing with. If it is bacteria, there are products to treat that, for instance. But, you will still want to clean the tank and lines real well.
