I have a L3901. I want to put in a good sized garden plot. I have been looking at disc sets, but in the course of doing so found some used tillers for sale. If I was to pick up a rotary tiller to do a good sized garden plot and maybe a few food plots I am wondering what size to get. I am looking for some useful advice on tiller size from guys who actually have one and use it?

I have found a 48" Kubota B48CA tiller used for sale, and the price is fair. Does anyone know if this will fit, and work? I can't seem to find much info online.

Thanks

I just picked up my L3901 last week with a 60" reverse land pride tiller and it did a great job on a small plot my dad had, tilled it very well!! Now i just need to find a rear ballast box.

I have a LP RTA1258 and it works very well. For your size tractor you could even go up to 72 inches with no problems.

I have a 48" tiller that I used on my L1500 that I kept when I got the L3800 works great but to cover the wheel tracks a 60" would be better

Normally a tractor would have the HP to run a tiller that is as wide as its tires, at their narrowest setting. If you get a smaller one, get one with the side shift feature, so you can offset the tiller to one side, to cover 1 wheel track...:D

I've got an L3800HST with R-4's. The outside of the tires are about 62" or so I think. I've got a 6' Tiller. Works fine.

Thanks for all the replies. I have done a little more research and found that indeed this unit would be too small. Back to searching for a good 60" ++ tiller, among just about every other attachment I "need" to have. Thanks again.

keep in mind all tillers are not made equal. I have a 62" Bushhog tiller with 4 tines per row. A KK tiller with 6 tines per row is much harder to run but do a much better job.

You should decide if you want a bigger one to cover more ground or a smaller one with more tine that will tear the ground up better. I would say a 60" 6 tine or a 72" 4 tine will work great on your tractor without putting it under to much of a load.

Reverse vs. forward till has some impact as well.
I have an L3200 and I think 60" forward or 48" reverse is about as best as I can do on it.

I have a 60 or 62" King Kutter 2 behind my L3200 HST. Works well. Its slow going, but I'm sure that's the nature of a tiller. A 72" might work, especially with the 6 extra HP. My tracks with R4s are 60", which matches most of my implements.

Oh, HST makes a big difference. Trivial to keep the go pedal pushed as far as it will go without lugging the engine. Should easily compensate for a slightly to big tiller where a gear couldn't.
