Hi folks,

I went and started up my tractor to have it die on me after a short while. When I went to start it again the starter solenoid wouldnt click. I checked out the posts of the solenoid with a voltmeter and its receiving constant 12V, even without the key turned.

Any info on this?

Does it have power on the solenoid wire also?

Be careful when we talk about JUST voltage ......voltage is how hard those little electrons are being pushed......them thar AMPs is how many electrons are moved! YOU need a good many an amp to just turn over an engine! Just cause you have 12 volts is not enough - I can take two 9 volt batteries and place them together and get 18 volts - yet a starter would not even "click"

I think you have a poor battery and or a poor charging system. The battery had just enough to run the engine for a while - the charging system is NOT providing current to the battery - so the battery is supplying the electricity to run your spark.

Re charge your battery - it should have a standing charge of 12.6 ish volts - clean ALL connections - then start your machine - NOW check the voltage - if everything works as it should, the voltage should be in the high 13's. I am gonna bet the voltage sloooowly drops as the engine continues to run......12.6 and dropping

report back what cha find:)

Didnt work. My main concern is that the solenoid is always receiving power. Shouldn't the power to the solenoid be cut off once the engine starts running?

Is the battery dead now?
Because if it was receiving power on the start wire of the solenoid all the time it would be dead in a short time.
