I found a new/used starter motor for my BX2200 that has a problem with the selenoid. The new one doesn't have the gear on the end so I was in the process of changing it when I couldn't get the gear off the arm of the old one. Mine has a metal collar that has a ring inside it. You can't just use a gear puller without ruining the ring and collar. The ring has pretty much no room to get a ring spreader into the gap. I tried. I can't even get my smallest screwdriver into the gap. There must be a way to remove this but I'm stumped. Suggestions?

Not for sure what you are up against, but maybe you need something like one of these.

This is the best picture I can get of the metal collar that covers the ring. A dental pick might be able to get in there if I could get enough pressure to pull one end out. There must be an easier way ...

You'll need to extend the gear and hold it out then push the collar back to expose the ring.

THANK YOU! That is an awesome tip. I love videos that are short, to the point and get the job done.
I figured it had to be something simple but I just couldn't see how to do it. Now I know.

I'm a LOT confused  where did you get a starter with no bendix gear?

You can't (shouldn't) pull the starter gear off of the old starter, the new starter should come with it.

This is just a small example of availability and all have the gear!
