I know I'm going to butcher this up but here goes, where the steering arm connects to the wheel housing is what appears to be a rubber graumet. I'm not real sure what purpose it serves but is coming off. Is this something I need to do something about??

Re: rubber Graumet coming undone.

this is not your tractor, but is this what you are describing?

IF so, it is called a tie-rod end boot, keeps dust/dirt out of the swivel insides!:)

Is it something I need to repair more sooner than later. from your diagram it appears i can replace just the dust boot. Looks like something i could possibly do. pictures are great and I thank you for the effort.

TripleR covers the inside boot (#60), now as far as the outside boot (#30), either pull the cotter pin out and back the nut off till it lines up with the end of the stud and give it a good thump with a hammer to drive it out or get a pickling fork and pop it off with that, you can rent them at most Auto Parts stores.
The pickling fork will damage the boot getting it off, but you are putting a new boot on it. ;)

I ordered the outside boot. The parts man asked me if I needed the retainer ring and I told him I might as well order 1 just in case. I got a few miles down the road when he called me and said the retainer ring is $47.00 and did I really need 1. Well I haven't taken it apart as yet so decided I was going to be extra careful with the one I have.

This doesn't sound so good. Hopefully if he ordered a $47.00 clip, I would receive the entire tie rod end and he would realize he might need to look a little harder.

I have my tie rod end removed, cleaned up and ready to reinstall. My question is does it need any greasing up say where the tie rod is inserted or does the dust cover have any grease on the inside?? Seems like the old one did.
