Plow bolt question

I have a single bottom blow with a left/right adjustment. After the adjustment is made you can then make it stay there from tightening a bolt (pictured).
The weld on the nut is cracking and the bolt does not want to keep the plow in position.
Im wanting to go ahead and replace both the nut and bolt.
My question is there a special bolt that I should be looking for that has a better way to grip on the end of the bolt when it makes contact rather than a standard bolt ?

Agree that it's a rather poor design.
Locking collars on the sides would be better, but we deal with what we have, yes a grade 8 bolt will be about the best.

Sounds great. Ive searched the web for something that might grip better into the metal but maybe just a grade 8 bolt and nut as you suggested will suffice just fine.

You can spend more money with something else, but it's worked for 30 years. Grind the old nut off, weld a new one in it's place. Just be sure to have the bolt in the nut when you weld it so you don't warp the nut too much welding.

You could also consider getting a screw with a "cup point". A lot of set screws come with this type of point so they seat and dig into the shaft better than an ordinary bolt or screw. You might not want to deal with an allen wrench though for tightening, so as an alternative you could get a cupped point set screw with a square head so you can use an ordinary wrench.

Just another idea,

Thats the terminology I believe I was looking for. Now finding and getting one will be my next step.

Maybe try drilling a little divot for the bolt to sit in. Or if it's not hard drilling and you have it adjusted the way it needs to be and won't be moving it just drill all the way through. Or just have the thing welded in place.

Or grind a point (or truncated cone) on your grade 8 bolt.

Mudball, do just as kwfiggatt suggested. Simply screw the nut onto the bolt, then use your bench grinder to round off the first couple of threads forming smaller diameter on the end.

Then use the nut to clean any thread damage caused by the grinding. Thread off and on a few times, then do your welding.
