Nice pictures! I have just a passing interest in general aviation and wonder how the economics of spraying with rotorcraft is when compared to more traditional fixed wing crop dusters. Here in central Wi I see more and more helicopters taking on that role. I also wonder what the over all accident rate is between the two.

It is neat watching these pilots set down on top of the truck that replenishes the sprayer tank and I assume refuel?

I've never seen choppers doing dusting here in Indiana.. maybe just not doing it in my area due to smaller areas which are still pretty good size. Actually I have not even seen the old crop dusting planes lately. Costly!

Thanks Ken!

These are in central IL. I suspect that the increasing number of wind farms are part of the reason for the increasing popularity of helicopters for this role. I think it was maybe 5 years ago when I saw the first one but it is becoming more common. I still see more planes out working but the helicopters are out from just before dawn until dusk so there is obviously enough business to keep them busy.

Fordtech86,

Thank you for posting those and I am glad that you and your family enjoyed your visit! I grew up in Gulfport and went out to Ship Island many times.

Mississippi has changed a lot since I left the coast but I still sometimes miss it.

The three coastal counties are very different than the rest of the state and a large percentage of the population migrated from elsewhere. There are numerous government installations along the coast that brought in a lot of people to the coast. My father was born in Minier IL but spent most of his life as a civilian at Keesler Air Force Base as an electronics instructor. He preferred the sand to the snow :)

I moved to central IL in 1989 just after finishing my PhD in the dusty flatlands of Lubbock TX and it feels like home. My daughter intends to come back to the area after finishing her education, it is a great place to raise a family-especially in the small villages and surrounding rural areas.

My daughter was also a big fan of those cannons. These photos were from a trip back to visit Mississippi relatives when she was four.

I remember going to Ship Island when I was a kid. Back when the guns were new! Actually, I don't remember the guns, just picking up shells on the beach.

They do need more maintenance but in fairness to the park service, Katrina happened between when I took my daughter and you took your son.

Poor Ship Island has been through a lot, it was once a single island but Camille Cut happened courtesy of hurricane Camille when I was a kid.

born in 86, not too far from the minier area (varna area where I’m from)
I have been through Varna a few times. A stepbrother used to live not far away on the other side of the river in Henry, he was an engineer at Cat Mossville designing large displacement stationary diesel engines.
