I'm wondering if I didn't blow a seal in the hydraulic cylinder, and when my PHD dropped if the piston didn't hit the top of the case causing the crack? I figure I'll be rebuilding the hydraulic cylinder while I'm inside anyway.

The only time I've ever seen a case cracked like that was from having a heavy implement lifted and bouncing across a plowed field.
It caused the pressure to go to high.

On your Kubota that's a near impossibility as there is a safety valve on the front of the case that supposed to stop that from occurring.

And good to hear you found a case for cheaper than new!

Do yourself a favor, seal up that crack with cheap silicone caulk and pressure wash it before you pull it apart. That’s a lot of dirt.

Wenger's does have a ton of salvage parts of all makes, but some of the stuff they have is in rough shape. I'm fortunate enough to live 20 minutes from the place and always inspect before purchase. If something doesn't pan out, I drive 20 minutes in the other direction and head to Messicks. They are top notch, but you do pay dearly for it. The case cover for the L4600 they have does look like it will be just fine though....

That's what I mow the most with my brush hog! 10" of annual precipitation is a wet year for us. Most who live East of I-35 and West of the Sierra Nevadas wouldn't understand.

I cleaned most of it with a 1 gallon weed sprayer, 25% mix of Purple Power, plastic putty knife, and a nylon brush as I don't own 600 ft of garden hose to get water to it. After 1.5 hours and about 10 gallons of water through the weed sprayer it was clean enough I wasn't afraid to tear it apart. I then sealed the differential underneath with RVT and lightly bolting down a corrugated plastic campaign sign that I collect after every election cycle. They are great for things like this, and to use as target backers at the range.

Fall is the worst time for mowing. Once everything dies and drys up, the radiator plugs quickly with dust and dried plant pieces. Once it starts to get up there in temperature and I stop to clean the radiator I'm done for the day. Until it dries out completely all the moisture from washing out the radiator does is cause it to plug up faster.

Does your brush hog have a floating top link?
Are you running around with it lifted and hitting bumps?

Because that will do exactly what you have going on!
Brush hog bounces and then slam, hits the cylinder with huge force, thus breaking the case.

Yes it has a floating top link. I don't run around the property with the mower lifted, I keep the wheel on the ground as much as possible. However, it could be my old box blade it is pretty heavy duty and probably weighs more than my mower.


I got it from my Dad when he went to a 12' drawbar style box blade. I'm 51 next month and he's had it as far back as I can remember. I remember it behind our old JD 60 tractor when I was a kid.

look at putting some type of cheap AC filter in front of the radiator.
this is a washable type

The Grand L's do come with screen filters for the radiator and HST cooler. It's surprising the amount of crap they catch too.....
