I'm a big fan of the movies that Michael Caine did in the 1960s. There was a trio of them with him playing Harry Palmer, a kind of free-lance spy for the British government. [One of many James Bond-themed concepts that emerged in that era...]
- The Ipcress File (1965)
- Funeral in Berlin (1966)
- The Billion Dollar Brain (1967)
The BDB is a bit goofy, but these movies draw me in because they are filled with plot twists.
He could still pull off the athletic aspects of the character back then, when he was in his early 30s...
Another worth watching is "Deadfall" (1968). I saw it just a couple of weeks ago. Full of plot twists.
Also, Caine did a movie in 1969 called "Play Dirty" which was along the lines of the Rat Patrol series, set in the Sahara Desert.
I watch most of my movies on youtube. But I have not been able to find "The Ipcress File" or "Play Dirty" 'for free' on the internet.
Any ideas?
I'm too cheap, I guess...
For a funny, smart, unserious British spy thriller, see "Our Man in Havana" starring David Niven (1959). Plot leads you all over the place. And it's full of pre-Castro street scenes of Havana. Fascinating.
