Figured Id do the brakes on this B6100 not expecting any surprises but when I took off the housing covering the brake shoes out poured transmission oil. Is this a common problem? Never had this happen on my B7000. Still trying to get off the drum but Imagine its a seal behind the drum. What a mess.

I expect but am not certain your brakes run in oil. Most new tractors do because it is a much more durable design.

I looked quickly at a parts book on Kubotabooks.com for a B6100.

The illustration was very fuzzy but what I did see is a cover plate over the brake assembly and a small shaft coming through the cover plate. There was no seal between the brake and the transmission visible.

There have been owners with hydraulic problems on the small series of Kubota's and they find bits of brake lining plugging the suction screen. More proof many run in oil.

Study the manuals available on Kubotabooks.

Go to Messick's site and look at parts illustrations.

Did you take the clip that holds the drum onto the shaft off?

Don't beat on it too much, and do not hit the shaft.
Try getting behind it and prying it out with 2 bars.
Or if you can get a puller on it that would help it along.
Once off you'll see the seal.

Because your shoes were soaked in oil I would replace them as they will have swelled and broken down.

And Dave is off a little with these older models they mostly had dry brakes, it wasn't till later designs that they had wet brakes.

orangerust,
You have never said, or I've never caught it, is your B6100 a, D (4wd gear driven), E (2wd gear driven) HST D (hydro 4wd) HST E (hydro 2wd)?
