Is it like this one? Make sure if it has the pressed in elbow, that it is not loose. Seen that happen as well.

single screw version,

The manual prime pumps can allow air too. I try to not be overly vigorous with them, they cant take much abuse. I've replaced many. Most are that bosch style. Pump only till resistance, any more, and it just overworks the seals. Running the engine gets the small bubbles of air out. Over pumping can make the small bubbles.

Only after you exhaust all other options. I would suspect the cam driven lift pump. They can leak/vent inside crankcase. Most have an external weep hole though. Could have been the problem the whole time.
Thanks for the pic's and advice . I will have to check again and look better as the single screw version seems to be like mine but I did not notice the screw

Might as well throw my 2¢ in. Ordinarily, I wouldn't suggest this, but I think you've mentioned pressuring the tank already. Maybe you could pressure it up to a few psi for a while and look for a leak.

Update: Switched out the fuel lines that I could access from the lift pump to separator to F filter to IP.
I can't get to the tank to lift pump line without some lying down acrobatics under the tractor; so that won't happen for a while.
Did a few start, run, shut down cycles with up to half hour in between.
It still needed a pump prime the first start but the following starts , I could crank it and it would prime that way.
I drove it around with no issues moving wet snow and the like for probably 10 -15 minutes.
I had just pushed a snow pile downslope when it stumbled, lost power and quit.
It would crank and fire but only run stumblingly for a few secs and then quit.
I tried that a few times and then hopped down to take a look at things.
First thing that caught my eye was the fuel shutoff at the separator, it was off .
I had turned it off when I last shut off the tractor and had neglected to turn it back on:giggle:
Flipped it back on and it cranked, fired, coughed a few times, and finally smoothed out and ran fine.(y)
I am surprised at how long it ran with the fuel lever shut off; it would have been enough to drive home from my woodlot and then some.
I parked it back in the shed and will see how it goes tomorrow.
If it is still an issue, then the next step is to pull the FF and separator and make sure they are properly installed.
Stand by.

I calling it fixed. New fuel lines and a solid seating of the ports on the separator housing.
Moved some piles of snow banked up against the shop wall and it ran fine and restarted after each shut down.
