New engine advise

Hey folks! I currently operate a pressure washing business in Florida. These 40 hp Kohler and Vanguard engines are not getting any cheaper and they only last a few years. Right now you can pick one up for $3-4k, and I’m limited to roughly a 15gpm pump at 2400 psi.

I am eyeballing some Kubota engines, more specifically the V2403 and V3800. Little did I know these little engines are regulated by the EPA just like the new diesel trucks. So all the emissions from the trucks carry on to these tiny engines.

The issue I think I am going to run into is the engine might be on for 20 minutes here, 30 minutes there maybe 10 minutes here, 60 there etc. I know this will cause issues with the DPF filter just like it would in the truck.

I did find an engine that would fit my needs, but unfortunately it’s located overseas and I don’t think customs is going to give it the stamp of approval since it’s a 2024 model, but it has no emissions.

Based on my needs, do you guys know of any options that might suit me?

pictures below is the engine I’m looking at, but like I said above, I’m not sure if customs will allow this into the US lol.

Would it make sense to switch to an automobile gasoline engine, such as GM "Iron Duke" 4 cylinder engines? It would eliminate the short run issue of diesel but possibly increase fuel consumption.

you will need all the ecu's and harnesses that go with it to run. Try to find an older engine wo electronic fuel injection. Normally less than 30 hp does not have emissions electronics. Also keep an eye out for a rv generator. They are usually cheap and the come in diesel versions also.

ecu’s and harnesses? Im sorry, but what are those for? All ive ever used is gas. Add fuel and a battery and crank it up. I know diesel is a whole different ball game. I need to stay in the 60hp range. When I did ask the seller if this engine was ready to be used, he told me yes but obviously I have to take that with a grain of salt.

You are looking at a direct injectjon common rail engine. Gas or diesel those type engines require sophisticated computer engine management = ECU and a whole bunch of sensors.

A V2203 is a very common non emissions engine the requires no computer.
Granted it's only in the 45HP to 51HP depending on the submodel.
Diesel engines can normally drive larger equipment due to higher torque.

im trying to get into the 60 hp range.
the formula we use to match the pump to a engine is PSI x GPM / 1450 x 1.5 = HP needed. Some folks use a 1.3 number, but I feel it tax’s the engine to much.
What RPM do you need? Is it variable speed, automatic idle, or? Is this a one-off or multiples?

I'm thinking you might luck into a wreck with a good engine w/accessories.

rpm doesnt matter as it’ll have a poly chain on it and I’ll use sprockets to get the pump at the right rpm, either 1450 or 1750. Just need one for myself.
