Just turned over 10 hours. Drove it on the road to another farm 2.7 miles away. Mowed with a 7 ft rotary cutter. Coming back on the road it made a high pitched sound that sounded like it was coming from the rear end. When I got home I put my hand on the rear axle housing and it was hot enough that I couldn’t keep my hand on it. Is the sound and the heat normal?

I'm gonna say no. My rear axle housing never gets too hot to touch even after mowing all day in 90⁰ temperatures. The squeal noise seems suspicious. Maybe oil passing over the relief valve. That would definitely cause excessive heat. Did it happen with the 3ph all the way raised?

Was it in 4wd? When I forget to put mine in 2wd on the road it will make a high pitched whine

Update: Talked to some techs at the dealership. They said if the lift arms were all the way up and the “back feed lever” wasn’t adjusted correctly that the pump would continue to run against a dead head and the fluid would pass through a relief valve. I went home and raised and lowered the lift arms and I can hear a difference when the arms reach all the way up so I don’t think this is the problem. Also remote lever is in neutral position. Steering and loader work fine. They said 2.7 miles in FWD wouldn’t cause the hot fluid. I checked the trans fluid when I brought it home on level surface with bucket up, loader down and lift arms down and fluid was on top mark on dipstick. Checked again today and fluid level is still good.

I wonder if something is wrong with the oil cooler?

Update: @Auger01 The high pitched whine was definitely caused by the 4WD being engaged while running down the road in road gear.
@North Idaho Wolfman I made the trip again and took the temp of the rear end with a Fluke IR thermometer and it was 130F and it felt hot so you were right about not being able to judge temperature by touch.

Thanks fellows. I appreciate everyone’s input.
