The 4240 has 4 ports in the rear (2 circuits) and the 4310 only 2 ports making one system that is controlled by the stick/lever on the valve at the operators seat.

We want to put a 3 point log splitter on either unit but need a set of ports on the back that are not controlled by a valve bank already because the valve bank will be on the splitter. Is there an easy way to tap into the existing valve bank on the tractor now to achieve this or does something need to be added or replaced ?

I can't say specifically to your models but most need to have 2 new lines run for the unit to work properly and efficiently.
Some times a better option is to add a PTO pump that runs at a much higher volume than the factory hydraulics. It's easy to hook up and will make the splitter run at a faster pace and with more power.

You will get better performance out of your splitter if you go with Wolfman's advice and get a pro pump and hydraulic reservoir for you splitter. While your tractor's hydraulics will run it, they will be slow because they don't have as many GPM's. Also, you would want to make sure that your tractor is set up to run continuous flow hydraulics. Not all tractors are able to and sometimes, not all of the remotes on the tractor is set up that way. If it isn't set up properly, you will burn up the pump.

AND, if I may, you can use it on ANY tractor with a PTO, so the next guy to use it don't have to worry about luggin YOUR tractor home
