Hello folks, I own a 2007 L39 (747hrs on it) and it has developed a oil leak from what I believe to be the timing cover gasket. I bought the replacement gaskets, crank seal and a new water pump since I’m this far into the repair. So it seems the previous owner had some work done to it. Looks as if they cut the plate that is connected to the side frames and sits directly in front of the engine and blocks the removal of the crank pulley. (The did weld it back in).... it appears they put some kind of sealant on the crank seal. My guess they may have been chasing this oil leak as well and got to the timing cover and changed their mind. Well this is my issue now and it’s getting fixed. For me to remove the timing cover I see part of the throttle system is sharing this timing cover. For me to pull the cover is there anything I can majorly screw up in there ? At this moment I don’t have a repair manual for it and can’t find much on the internet. I’m to the point I am going to cut that plate again and pull the crank pulley off. Water pump is off and all the bolts to the timing cover except the very lower ones are off.

The WSM for the L39 will generally describe major dismantling of it, but won't help much with taking off engine parts while still in the machine. Cutting the plate for access was a work saver in the situation, and may still be the right call.

No tricks to taking off the gear case cover. There are several o-rings & seals to remove and replace. (see Wolfman's post below)

To preserve engine timing, don't take off any gears! After cleanup of surfaces use a non-drying adhesive for the new gasket. Good luck !

edit: - added the piston/crankshaft parts drawing

You need to pull the stop solenoid and the throttle plate, there is one set of springs that are connected to the governor.

When you get the cover off, there is a smooth sleeve on the crank take it off and replace the O-Ring seal behind the sleeve as that can leak too and it looks like a main seal leak.

Guys thanks for the response. I just now seen all your posts and I managed to pull it down and get it back together. I did cut that crossmember out the way. It took a little while to figure out the springs and how to remove and install. However didn’t know about the crank sleeve. And of course my parts guys made no mention of it. I even had to go back to them and get all the o rings. So I did get that leak fixed any how. Now it looks like I have a dribble from the oil pan about mid ways. I just shined a light under it as I walked thru the shop and seen a silver dollar size puddle. With out laying under it yet and tips for changing it out. Dropping the drive shaft, remove front axle? Etc.....

I have to remove my gear case also. Could you be able to send me a picture of where to cut the front frame to do this? Thanks
