Bought a very used L3410 about 2 months ago. Noticed the 4WD slipping and disengaging. Replaced the couplings on the shaft from rear to front. When I pulled the front coupling off, this is what I found. The teeth on this front shaft are almost non-existent. (This is the front, looking up from the bottom of the tractor, where the front coupling would fit.) What am I looking at as far as repairing this? If I pull this cover off, can this “gear and shaft” be replaced? Or is it more extensive than that. Thanks for the help!

Unfortunately that will require a new bevel gear set. The entire differential will need to be removed, gone through and reassembled.

You can see the assembly in illustrated parts list at this site.

Here is the illustration for the front differential showing part #10 which is what I believe you need to replace. There are other parts that should be replaced and you (probably) get the gear marked A along with #10 part number. There is a break in that part number according with the serial number of the tractor.

*Update - started tearing apart the pinion gear assembly and have run into a problem. Is the oil plan going to have to be dropped in order to get the assembly off? I started hammering away at the assembly once I removed the four bolts and started noticing I may not have the clearance. Any one on here done this repair before? Give me a shout.

Might be easier to drop the entire front axle.

I did that to my M series when I installed a locker in the differential.
Have to remove the knuckles and axle shafts anyway to remove the differential then remove the pinion.

Yes drop the axle not the oil pan,
FYI: On most model you can't drop the oil pan without dropping the front axle. :sneaky:
And if you were able to drop the oil pan the crank and such will still be in your way. :p

The right front hub and assembly has to come off the axle. After that you have to remove the input seal, then the snap ring. The pinion will then come out of the axle housing. The bevel gear then comes out the axle housing through the opening left by the right side hub assembly.

Download the WSM and read it thoroughly before going any further.

I don't know what you read but none of differential will come out where the pinion goes in.

Remove 60 remove 70 pull all of the parts out for the pinion.

Remove the right rear case pull axle out and remove differential.

You will need to follow the WSM to set the gear lash properly or you will risk serious damage to the new gears.

*Update - after two weeks sitting in my shop and working to remove the front axle, replace the pinion gear assembly, and put it alllll back together, my Kubota L3410 now has 4wd working again. This was quite the undertaking. And if anything this major needs repair in the future, I am taking it to a professional. The weight of the front axle assembly alone was enough to make me almost give up and haul it off to the scrap metal yard! LOL!

yeah try doing that every day. Did it for 30 years and don't miss it any either. But it paid the bills, well mostly. There was a few times.....nevermind.

pretty easy job for those who've done it a time or three.

But you learned something and that in itself is important.
