Does my L3400 2WD (gear) have a dual-mass flywheel? I ask because there is a clatter at idle in neutral that goes quiet when I push the clutch in. Some of the diesel pickup forums talk about that symptom in connection with a DM flywheel when the springs get weak. Is this noise normal for my tractor?

Not sure about your model but my L3000 had a noise that sounds about like what you describe. Turns out it was the kick stand legs used for removing the loader. Have no idea why they would get quiet with the clutch pushed in but they would. My M9000 had a noise that was driving me crazy. Turns out it was the draw bar rattling when nothing was hooked to it.

My point is, look for something simple. You may have a different beast but sometimes a tie strap works wonders.

I too get odd noises of things that oscillate when it sits at certain RPMS, But If your 100% sure it's coming from the flywheel area then I would say it's got a throw-out bearing that's going out, or the clutch is misadjusted and is riding causing the noise. ;)
