I have an L3130 and was going to get a mower for it. The Kubota dealership here in Sherman Texas swears it will handle a 6 foot brush hog. I will be going over trees up to 2". What do you all think? I think it would do a lot better with a 5 footer.

Thank you

I've run a 6' behind my L3010 without problems but I've only gone thru trees up to about 1.5" largest. Tall tough prairie grass can bog it down a little. You should be fine.

Make sure you get a bush hog with a stump jumper on it. I believe most come with a stump jumper standard, there are those less expensive one's without.

How wide is your rear tire span?

I don't like the mower to hang out wider than the rear tires, unless I'm just mowing open fields. I have to mow around trees and fences so I use a 5' on the L3800, but it'll pull the 6 footer just fine.

Don't be fooled -- your machine will bog down with the 5 foot bush hog. I had no problem stalling a L3800 w/ a 5ft before realizing the slip clutch was too tight. You do not have the power to keep a 6 foot deck spinning while tackling moderate brush without working your tractor to death.

Keep in mind that going from a 5 foot to a 6 foot is not an increase of 20% as you expect.

a 5 foot bush hog has a disc area of 19.63 Sq ft
a 6 foot bush hog has a disc area of 28.27 Sq ft

So in short, the 6 foot is 150% the size of 5 foot, and you will regret getting it. Just because the tractor can spin up an implement, does not mean it will keep it spinning when being used.

I agree that the 5 foot hog is a better match for the tractor.

I have never bogged down my L3800DT with either 5' or 6' mower. No slip clutch on either. Blades sharp... I have been mowing with bush hogs since 1983 though. ;)

That's probably why though.....we purchased a farm that seems to have had zero maintenance since 1983. :D

Now that it's cut and we're on season 2 I can run a 5ft hog in 2H and get a finish look every 10 days or so.

I have bogged down my 6 foot brush hog behind my 50 hp tractors. The kubota does a lot better than the massey does. But both will bog down in thick enough grass, or in brush. I may also be harder on my equipment than lots of people. The kubota has only bogged down once in grass, but the massey would bog down often.

Well ended up going with the 6 foot Landspride RCR1872 and went and made 8 passes on the field with all the mesquites and I didn't have a problem. Only bogged down a couple of times, dropped down to 510rpm. Other than that you wouldn't know you were mowing anything. Set the tractor up to run at 3.5 mph and went over stuff up to about 2" in dia. It just spit out wood chips at the back. I made a video with my iphone but it won't let me up load it.

How fast do y'all mow at?

Thank you all!!!

I don't have a set speed for mowing. It depends on the ground conditions and whether or not I know the area I'm cutting. If it's new ground I go slow. Never know what's hiding under tall grass and brush but it can get expensive real fast.

This is all new ground to me as we just bought this place a year ago next week. This is the first time it will all be mowed at once. Keeping up around the house with a 5 acre yard which about 3 of it gets cut with a B6100E and a 48" Landspride brush hog takes a lot of time. I tried to tackle the 27 acres at the back of the property with this setup and after 18 hours of mowing the L3130 showed up then yesterday the RCR1872 was dropped off. It amazed me how much more got cut in the same amount of time with the L3130 over the B6100 LOL.

Thank you all!!!

I went over stuff today that this brush hog and tractor were not meant to go over, But at .2-.4 mph it handled it just fine. When I'm in the grass I was running about 3.5. If it got thicker I slowed down. Still haven't had the pto drop below about 510 but 99% of the time it stays right at 540 give or take a couple. I pretty much baby my equipment. Stuff is to expensive to be rebuilding or replacing parts.

4' hogs just plain suck! 6' is nice when mowing large areas...
The 4 footer isn't bad on the B6100E to mow the front yard and the sides, I really need to find a farmer in this area that would plant the back field so I can get the ag exemption. or continue to mow it letting it grow up would drive me crazy.
