I replaced the starter in my ZD 323 with the same starter part and find I have an extra ~ 4 inch white wire with a snap-on on the end of it. Engine starts OK, but what to do (if anything) with the unattached wire.

You don't need to do anything with that wire, it's an out feed wire (option for some models with a different type of fuel stop solenoid).
